Does pressure affects items in checked bags like shampoo, hair mousse, etc? |
I have never flown on an airplane but I have traveled by car and I remember the altitude of the place where I went was higher and my shampoo bottle was all funny.
BTW, are regular shampoo bottles allowed in a checked bag? What about mousse, perfumes, air freshener? I need these stuff as I'm not going to stay on a hotel.
I'm going to Paris, France from Texas, US.
Thanks :D Additional Details I already know what can be carried on a "carry-on" ... 3oz, 3/4 ziploc bag... I mean on the checked bag, the big suitcase :P |

To actually answer the question you asked:
Most baggage compartments are pressurized, so there won't be a lot of change. However, in the brief little bit of pressure change (the kind that makes you pop your ears), some containers could expand.
Mousse and other pressurized containers won't be affected, but sometimes your plastic bottles (like shampoo, face wash, etc) could expand slightly and spill open.
To deal with that, I take off the top, squeeze out a bit of air, then holding the bottle squeezed, put the top back on. That way, if there's any expansion it won't fill up the bottle. (Plus, keep them in sealed waterproof bags.) |

it depends on how the baggage compartment is configured. I had a lighter in a bag before and later was told they explode if put in bags but mine did not. Some items may rupture but I also remember aerosol cans in my baggage. You know pets are put in baggage compartments so the environment for them is heated and pressurized. |

Yes, it can affect them. You can only put traveling size bottles of your personal items in a gallon size zipper bag when traveling, not regular sized one. These are if you are planning on taking them with you in your carrying bag. If you want to take them in your suitcase, you can and they can be of regular size, but not the ones you're carrying with you on the plane.. on your carrying bag. |

The luggage compartments are usually pressurized so you shouldn't have an issue if you put in your baggage. You can't take that stuff as carry on though.
Lucky. Have a good trip. |

I do all three! I squeeze out the air, wrap the tops with tape and pop them in a ziplock. Often I even put that in yet another bag!
Overkill? No, it's really saved me a few times when they did leak. I had a bad checked bag leak and swore, never again! What a pain...
Tape the bottle top down, then circle the tape around the opening. If it does leak, you just throw out the ziplock and wash off the bottle. Only a little will leak.
I find that those "travel" sizes are the worst for leaking. If I have a trip coming up, I'll take my own shampoo and when it gets down to a small amount, I squeeze out the air and put it aside. At some point I'll tape it up and bag it. When I go away, I'll use the rest up and chuck the whole container, leaving more space in my bag. Taking a big bottle is not a big deal if it doesn't weigh much.
I will tell you that while products are more expensive in Paris, you can find most brand names over here. Especially the standard brand shampoos and conditioners. You don't need to load your bags down if it's a long trip. Bring your own deoderant and if you use dandruff shampoo with tar, that's illegal in Europe but no one will notice you're bringing your own (am I getting technical?) Their deo doesn't work too well and I can't find my favorite toothpaste (Arm & Hammer).
You can't buy baby oil here in France. Buy it in the gel form for travel (can you imagine that leaking? yikes!) If you have a specific product you love, bring that. I use Seabreeze, which I can't get here so I drag that back with me. When I travel, I put it in a small metal spray bottle. Less likely to leak, by the way.
Make-up is small and easy to pack so I always bring my own. Some things might be fun to try while on your trip, like body creams. There is Body Shop in France too, in case you use any of their products.
Can you tell I have this down to an art? After 18 years of living abroad and 13 of being a F/A, plus travel to almost 60 countries, I pay attention to what I do and don't bring!! |

my advice is to put tape over the shampoo and other items. That is what I do. That way it wouldn't spill and ruin your clothes or anything.
And yes regular shampoo bottles are allowed in checked bags. |

Even if the aircraft hold is pressurised, this is normally at a lower pressure than your departure point. So anything that has air in it is likely to leak. I have even had a jar of instant coffee pop open, and of course it was the one time that I didn't have it in a ziploc bag.
Shampoo, toothpaste in stiff plastic bottles (not tubes) etc are all prone to this. I normally try to get as much air out as possible and then put this stuff in ziploc bags to contain any spillage. A small freezer bag or sandwich bag would also be fine.
Someone has already given you the TSA site address for banned items. Pressure pack cans (aerosols) are generally prohibited above a certain size even in checked baggage, so you will need to be careful about these.
I know that it is nice to have toiletries that you are familiar with, but I find it is just as easy to get some things when I arrive. And if you are going to Paris, what better excuse to do a little personal shopping! |

you should put them in plastic bags, like the big ziplock ones because they could explode from the pressure and movement of the flight. |

yes the air pressure is lost in them |

Are you planning on putting some of those things in your carry-on? For all liquids, gels, and aerosols carried through security checkpoints:
1. Must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
2. Must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
3. Must remove your quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from your carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.
You are allowed reasonable amounts over 3 ounces of the items above in your carry-on baggage, but you will need to perform the following:
1. Separate those time in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
2. Declare you have the items to the Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3. Present the items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening. |

Everything you need to know about carry ons

Putting all these in sealable baggies keeps them safe. Suck out excess air with a straw, don't have any full bottles. |

how bout you pick up the phone line and contact your travel agency, the must know, instead of wasting time posting this question for ignorants who will probably end up giving you all the false information.
don't take it personally but if you wont loose anything if you ask the agency. |
