No, they don't need a warrant. You are not in your home, you have *chosen* to fly, and are therefore subject to any searches or other rules the government or airlines deem necessary.

If you don't want to have your rights "violated", take the bus or drive.

sammmantha
are you trying to hide something?

well sometimes to check in case u know......anyway they would especially in NY but they wouldnt go ur personal stuff i guess

michelle
why does it matter if they open it? what are hiding or trying to hide in it? are you a terrorist or something?

murrayc
Most airport security will ask you to turn it on.

Taffy Saltwater
When I travel w/my laptop I always have it out & ready to boot up if necessary. If you don't want to conform w/regulations, you don't have to fly.

Airports are really very uptight about security since Sept. 11. And actually, they don't have to have a search warrant because it's sponsored by the federal government, and you're the one that's requesting their services. It's like a term of service agreement.

They may or may not ask you to open/turn it on, but they will make you take it out of its case. All luggage has to be x-rayed and screened, as well as you having to go through metal detectors, and possibly a random person search.

dont know about ny but in ca you have to not only open up but also turn it on in most airports but the last time i flew was about 18 months ago.

funnyboat5
yes, they check every piece of electronics to make sure they are working. They can take it away if it doesn't work it happens.

Ny
yes they do.. I had it checked when I was at the airport for security reasons....2005

I hope so

LIZA P
they never asked me and I travel with mine all the time

Kate C
I've never seen security actually open your laptop itself, but I know at ALL airports you have to take it out of its case and put it through x-ray by itself.

Robin
I've flown all over the U.S. and the world with a pair of laptops. Only once have I been asked to boot one.

They may ask you to open it, or they may open it, but that is different than booting it up.

As to invasion of privacy... that went out the window with 9-11.

blackjackr2000
Just did some flying a few week's ago and they just made me put it in its on bin for the xray and the case in another bin.

I've traveled extensively for business for the last ten years and have found that security seems to make up rules as the day goes by. If you want to fly it is as if they hold your ability to board in their hands.

southrntrnzplnt
They can ask you to boot it up, but wont go searching the hard drives. And doing this is not an invasion of privacy...its for security....think about it. Did you think Sept 11th would happen? Or that someone could get a bomb onboard in their shoes?? Calm down, do what they ask when they ask it and quit worrying about it. Security has to be way over protected now. But it doesnt happen often that they ask you to book up your laptop. If they do, just do it. Pitching a fit makes you look like you have something to hide and will only add to more searches of you and your belongings.
