Dog on an airplane? Survival rate? |
I need to fly my dog 800 miles in a crate. She's 14 years old and weighs 75 pounds. Will she survive the trip? Anyone with experience flying dogs that can help...I need advice on this. Plz an Thx. Additional Details She has not flown before. So, I am very worried about doing this. Paying for "ground service" is out of the question monetarily. Thanks for the advice. |

has she flown before? i haven't even flown myself, let alone board a dog, but i think it would have a lot to do with her temperament in the first place. being an older dog, i think it might be hard on her. i've heard it's cold, noisy and not that pleasant. your vet can give you sedatives, i'd even try giving her a dose a few days ahead of time, just to see how fast she reacts to them, and how long the effect is..make her crate soft and warm. my daughter flew from tucson to seattle with a cat, but she was able to keep the cat with her. i'd talk to your vet about it...edit....regarding the answerer who advised against sedatives, a mild sedative, such as acepromazine, won't harm her. i give it to my dogs during thunderstorms and the 4th of july (they get terrified of the noise)..and that's what the vet gave my daughter for her cat, also. it calms them down, why risk having her be stressed and scared during her trip.. |

My dog was about that age when I flew her from DFW to San Francisco (it was Y2K and we didn't want to leave her home in case any of the dire predictions came true). She was fine. If your dog is in good health (and she will need to be, you'll have to provide a health certificate from the vet) I see no reason to worry. As to sedatives, they are NOT a good idea. |

You need to ask your vet, especially considering your dog's age. I know that some vet's recommend a mild doggy sedative for dogs in the cargo area of a plane and others don't. Also, I have heard that it's very cold in the cargo section of a plane. Maybe you could drive the 800 miles instead or board her until you get back. : / |

If she's that old and never done it before, you may have to medicate her. Whether she survives or not is entirely up to how strong she is. ♥ |

Hmm...... I don't know....
You think maybe a vet might could answer for you? Get a sort of doggie check up to see if she's in good condition for flying, maybe?
So.... Texas. Excited??? |

Get doggy tranks from your vet. Then be sure the crate is large enough for her to stand up in. There should be no problem. Airlines fly dogs all the time. I've never had a problem. |

Instead of taking your dog on a commercial airliner in the cargo space, you may want to consider a pet transport service. He would be much better cared for and not be in a cold, unattended cargo space. See page below...there are many pet transport services to check out. |

I've taken several trips with my dogs. When my chow chow was 12 checked her in to the cargo. She made it just fine! I did drug her a little (as my vet told me to.) Makes for a shorter trip for her.
However, when I bought my pom the breeder I purchased him from was in MO. She set him through Pet Air to me in CA. It's a great service! I've been using it ever since.
Either way I'm sure your dog will make it to the destination. :) |
