Doyou think that fat/obese people should pay for 2 seats on airplanes?

Have you ever had to sit next to one of these very large people? It's da*n uncomfortable to have their grossness oozing into my space which I had to pay for,I figure that if their fat spreads over to my area then they should pay part of my ticket!

I totally agree. When its an inconvenience to the other passengers (in a full flight), people who dont 'properly' 'fit' in one seat should buy two.

Your question is unkind, and your comments uncalled for.

By your criterion, should a mother with a babe-in-arms pay extra? What about someone pregnant?

If I were overweight or obese (I could do to lose about 5 kg by who couldn't?) I'd be spitting mad if required to pay extra.

For one thing, the airlines know how much the average person weighs, and the seats are or should be designed to accomodate bigger than average persons. Making overweight people pay extra is gouging, pure and simple.

Secondly, there would be a good argument for discrimination on the basis of physical disability. Many overweight people are disabled because of bad knees, slow metabolism, or whatever. I'd be suing.

In the meantime, I suggest that maybe you could be a bit more charitable and kind towards others. It is difficult enough being obese, and putting up with rude individuals who seem to think that fat people have no feelings. You might get fat yourself one day.

Yes I agree. Came back from Fiji once. My husband had to sit next to a grossly overweight person. He was half in my husbands seat. Since I'm smaller than hubby, we switched seats & I found it horrible. We're talking a 10 hour flight too.

Airline seats were designed for the average male to sit in of course that was before we all started to eat like pigs (myself included) I'm 260 lbs 6'1" and I fit fine in the seats even some of the narrow exit row seats.

The way I look at it is if you can afford to stuff your fat face full of groceries till you weigh as much as a small planet then you should have to pay for two seats AND a carbon charge because the plane is going to use more fuel to haul your large backside skyward. I would agree that IF there was a medical condition then I think possibly the airlines should give that person a break but if they are just fat then that little piggy should have to pay

I do agree that people who know that they will take up more than one seat on an airplane should purchase 2 seats. However its very difficult for airlines to enforce that because it could be considered discriminiation. It has happened where an airline made a larger person purchase two seats and they have been sued. My suggestion is next time u fly and someone is taking up some your seat, ask the flight attendant if you can move or see if you can stand by for another flight. It sucks but unforunately people in this country are "i'll-sue-you" happy.

OMG! One time I had window seat and there was a guy ion the end seat. I was like yay no ones going to be sitting in the middle. Then right before we take off a big fat man comes and sits there I mean come on why the middle at least?? I was so mad!

sometimes i put my arm rest down so they can stay on there own side lol this was funny

Calm down, fat isn't catching. Airlines are responsible for creating extremely uncomfortable seating. Even if you are a person of normal weight, it's very unpleasant to fly, and any flight longer than 2 hours can be very painful due to the cramped quarters. You have as much right to comfort as the larger person does. There should be extra large seating available for more robust passengers. But the airlines are only interested in packing people in like sardines, there is absolutely no consideration to comfort. Seats are narrow, there is dangerously limited leg and foot room. Not to mention the fact that if someone does put their seat back, they are in the lap and face of the person in back of them. That person is effectively trapped in place unable even to turn. The airlines need to change the seating...the larger person is not your problem, complain to the airlines.

They should purchase two seats if the plane is sold out otherwise. If there are going to be empty seats, then let them have a seat next to an empty one.

My mom was a flight attendent in the 50s, she said the big people had to buy 2 seats back then.
