Ear infection and flying? |
I'm flying out to Italy on Wednesday but I've had an ear infection since last Tuesday, and it hasn't shifted yet. I've heard that I'm not supposed to fly and that my eardrum could burst. Is this true and if so, is there any way i can help to clear this before the flight. I'm on medication for it.
My family has a history of eardrum ruptures (my dad, aunt, grandfather and great uncle all burst their ear drums at some point) so will this put me at a greater risk? I've flown lots of times before and never had any problems. |

There's a big risk, once I travel with an ear infection and it get worse, I felt It was exploding, lucky for me nothing worse happend than getting more pain. But the doctor told me never to do that again, as you say you are risking for complications.
Sorry, don't have a good answer about what to do, is nothing I know, other than not take the fly.
Good luck! |

If you have an ear infection DO NOT fly, trust me you will have a miserable flight the pain will be unbearable and that is without your eardrum bursting. Do yourself a favour and stay home. |

so, you're going to check out Italian hospitals and doctors?
since there's a really good chance they'll be who you're spending your vacation with.
when you get back, let me know.
who knows, someday i might want to go check out the state of Italian health care. |

Your best idea would be to not fly with the ear infection. While you may not notice the effects of flying at altitude during the climb and cruise, you WILL feel it on the way down and it won't be fun. There is no medication that I know of that will alleviate this problem and you are running the risk of getting a perforated eardrum (not fun). It can happen, these aren't horror stories being made up to keep you from flying. I know a guy who started his training to be a commercial pilot, got his PPL done, but went flying when he was sick and got a perforated eardrum. Needless to say, he did not continue with his training. 'Nuf said. |

Its best if you don't fly with an ear infection. The high altitude pressure makes your ear really uncomfortable and it might hurt. There is a possiblity of it rupturing since its in your family. I think you should postpone your flight. Its for your health. |

Your ear may pop witch is normal but not burst. Take some Tylenol or Ibuprofen It should help in case of any pain. Don't make a big deal about it it's not like your ear will fall off. Have fun in Italy wish I could come to LOL. |
