Emergency Situations at 40,000 feet?

What happens if a passenger becomes ill or panics in the air? Do airlines carry on board medications? Do they carry sedatives? Just back from Singapore and was thinking of this on the plane...

Yes they do. And they are trained to know how to handle most types of passenger panic attacks. Ussualy they will try everything they can to calm the person down, if that fails they will offer them a sedative if they choose. However, they can not force anyone to take one if they do not want to.

Airlines do carry some medication on board, as well as heart defibrilators. The cabin crew are not trained medical professionals though, so if a person has any kind of serious medical condition, like a heart attack, they will do whatever first aid they can (Which they are well trained in), while the plane will divert to the nearest airport with access to nearby medical assistance.

Most US airlines carry defibrillators and they also carry a first aid kit which has very basic stuff in it. They also have an emergency medical kit that has a more extensive supply of drugs that a trained medical professional can use. Either an MD or a DO can use the supplies in this kit. Most airlines have the ability to get a communications link to a medical facility for advice and assistance while airborne.
It isn't as good as an ambulance or an emergency room but has proved to be sufficient the vast majority of the time.

Ollie
They will have trained staff.

My friend was sedated as she started freaking out with fear! So her airline definitely carried something to sort her out!

I was on a flight to Orlando 2 years ago and a elderly man was having a lot of trouble breathing and they had some type of oxygen tank on the plane to help him breathe. He felt better after that but the airline still made an announcement asking if there were any doctors on the plane who could help figure out some reasons why he was having trouble breathing. We didn't make a stop at a closer airport I guess because his breathing was stabalized and the doctor said he was OK, but I asked the pilot about what they would do if it was more of an emergency and he said they would land ASAP like the people above have said.

The plane do carry a range of medicine and equipment onboard as standard. The crew is trained in basic first aid, nothing more. So for more serious case, they will try to enlist passenger help, hopefully someone who is medically qualified.

Need to, the lane will land at the nearest available airfield for medical assistance, at the plane captain's discretion.

We open the door and throw the sickies out.

Just kiddin' ... yeah, the aircraft has a first aid kit on board, and all cabin crew are very well trained in first aid.

If someone is very ill, eg. major heart attack or something similar, then the plane descends straight away and is diverted to the nearest airport to get that person to hospital ASAP.

Not Ecky Boy
they can even tie the person down if they want to. Don't worry they are WELL trained to deal with this and no doubt some passengers will be quite glad to assist, punch them into oblivion probably if they need to.

People are a LOT less tolerant of strange or unusual behaviour on planes nowadays, and it's easy to see why.
