Not a good idea. Very unfair, you don't know if the 'fat' person may have a medical condition. What's it called 'size-ist'? Treat everyone as equal.

I think size is something that varies for so many reasons that imposing a charge like you suggest would be very unfair.

I agree that big people should pay for two seats. If they think I am going to share my seat after I have paid for it, they are crazy.

That's a hard one. The only thing I have to say is that I feel it's a little unfair that I have to travel all smashed up (as I've had several times) because the person right next to me is very overweight.

I understand how it would be an unconfortable situation for the overweight person, but what is happening now is that in certain occasions the people travelling right next to this person has to put up with the discomfort.

Im not sure about making them pay for two seats, but the space they take up SHOULD be accounted for. If they take up half of the seat you are supposed to sit in what should you do? If they take up 2 seats the airline should not book one of the seats next to them, and to avoid law suits and controversy, nothing should be said at the counter, or there should be an option you pick yourself when you buy the ticket stating that you may need two seats due to butt size.

Being big is one thing but the attitude that goes with it is what really gets me. Me 5ft nowt & size 6, (just the way I am made) but when sat next to a really fat person who needs more room why do they look at me as if i'm to blame? im fed up gettin squashed by mr or mrs XL & then made to feel as if I am the one taking up too much room. I guess you pay for the space your body takes but for heavens sake if ive paid for my space I want ALL of it thanks!!!!!

If you need to seats, you should pay for two seats. Weight on a flight is a big consideration. The weight on cargo has to be limited. Passengers are cargo too, if the weight is equal to two average passengers, then you need to bear your share.

There's a reality show on one of the channels about Southwest Airlines (I think its called Airline?) and they do charge people on occasion. They call them "passengers of size" and charge them for the seat next to them becuase no one can sit there. Either that or they just fly first class so they can fit in the seat.

the airlines try and pack people in that metal box like sardines so as to try and vacuum as much money as they can out of its customers.
They would never go out of their way to try and accommodate anyone ,let alone an overweight person.
They are like car salesman,once they have their money,they do not want to know you,and treat you like crap when you try and ask a question.
They price gouge their flights during the Holidays,and do not try to accommodate your to get on other flights,and there is no order when you try and stand in line when your flight is cancelled.
For example:
flight from Denver to Buffalo usually is less than $300. During the holiday season the price is over $1000.00.
If you owned a business,you would not be able to do that,the government would shut you down.
There are people who feel sorry for the airlines,but I don't. They have more money than they know what to do with,and when they make their millions,they close down and file bankruptcy and get government funding so they can screw the public again..
It is ridiculous.

It's a bit unfair when a person who is really skinny gets charged more if she/he has packed a bit too much. It's the overall weight of the flight that matters. However I would get offended if I was fat and charged more because of that.

Once they were going to charge me more because of my heavy baggage (I was moving to another country). I simply opened my suitcase and started putting on loads of clothes and took a lot of time doing so. I also told them that I could probably swallow some of my things and carry them in my body. They finally got annoyed with me and decided not to charge me - hehehe. Annoying - yes, but I am skinny and at the time I was really broke. :)

I've always said that. And I think they should have to pay road tax based on their size (same way we do with vehicle engine sizes), they should also be subject to the rules of the road, and public liability insurance wouldn't be a bad idea either. What about 'CAUTION: Wide Load' signs too? Yes, they'd also be a good idea.
