FLIGHT ATTENDANTS: Does it annoy you when people don't listen to the safety instructions? |
Just wondering because I've noticed that on some flights, it seems like we pay attention to the instructions and on others, people are talking throughout. So I just wondered if it bothers you guys at all, or if you don't care either way. |

YES!!! Flight Attendants deliver life saving information! So why wouldn't you listen for the 5 or 10 minutes that it is presented to you?? They are presented to you for your safety as well as mine!
Anyone who ever survived a plane evacuation or worse must have listen to the safety briefings! Different models of aircraft are configured differently. They are not all the same.
Some passengers who are frequent flyers think they know it all off by heart! But in reality, they are compromising their own safety by sitting smuggly reading the newspaper instead of listening to the direction of the Crew!
In flight Emergencies and Evacuations can and do happen! The Crew train extensively for that reason. It's all about safety at 37,000ft!
Smart travelers listen to any and all safety briefings. The days immediately following 9/11...All eyes were on the Crew during safety briefings. That's how it should be!
In an Emergency Evacuation, a passenger who paid attention will be the Crews ally and the ones who did not are sure to add to the panic and confusion!
We see who pays attention and who does not. We try to establish eye contact with as many passengers as possible for that reason. Just the same as a teacher knows which students are paying attention and who is not. I'd love to ask a passenger who clearly did not pay attention a safety related question and see how well he or she answers! Now imagine that person having to act in a real life senario!
Someone who did not listen to the safety brief may put on their lifevest immediately during a water ditching and inflate it right away. The water now fills the Cabin and the inflated Life vest floats you up and pins you to the Aircraft ceiling! Now you're trapped in your final resting place!
The moral of the story is to listen carefully. If you had listened you would know not to inflate your life vest until you are exiting the Aircraft door just before you jump!! And your life would not have ended on the Aircraft ceiling!!
That really did happen!
We can't force anyone to pay attention. All we can do is educate passengers and remind them that it is for their safety. The rest is up to them!
And talking during the briefings, especially in a raised voice, is not only inconsiderate but it also compromises the safety of those who did want to invest in their own safety and security! |

It doesn't bother me when people don't pay attention, as many people fly often enough that they are familiar with the safety information. If you aren't familiar with it, I hope you are paying attention....because in an emergency, it helps out the f/a's if you know what to do, and where to go. I understand that 99.9% of the population knows how to fasten and unfasten a seatbelt, but it's required that we show it every time....it's not something we do for the fun of it. I would be curious to see how many people pay enough attention to know, for example, that you have to pull ("pull the mask toward you to extend the plastic tubing") the oxygen mask toward you...this is so that it releases the "pin" that allows the oxygen to flow. What does bother me is when people talk through it, not allowing the passengers around them to listen. Just because you may be a frequent traveler doesn't mean the person sitting next to, in front of, or behind you is too!! |

Many people who don't listen are frequent travelers who know this stuff. I spent a year and a half taking the same MOnday and the same Friday flight back and forth between two cities, and I swear at the end of it I could have GIVEN the safety instructions, word for word. I do pay attention on a new plane, but if I'm doing this kind of travel I don't.
I generally glance at the safety card, just to be sure everything is where I expect it to be.
By now, though I do know how to fasten a safety belt and to grab an oxygen mask. |

Ok,, a perfect example of people not listening is that plane crash over @ Madagascar about 20 years ago...
It clearly indicates in the card and the demo to never inflate the life vests until after you jump out into the water....
right before the 757 went down. Some of the survivors (the one's who followed directions) heard popping noises which was pretty much the noise of a life vest inflating. When the water rushed in,,, people who had their vests inflated got carried right up into places they didn't even wanna go. Some got strangled,,, and even some got decapitated.....
Grusome huh????
Also,,, here's another one...
The lights on the aisle do lead to an exit,,, altho in the demo, they always say,, "Please locate the exit nearest you, the nearest exit maybe behind you." In case of a fire,,, the cabin will be filled up with smoke.. best to do is get really low on the ground which the only means of locating an exit is by following the illuminated lights on the aisle.... Imagine if you didn't know there was an exit right behind you and you tried to crawl to the one on the front which was the furthest... Seconds count in case of a fire...
Maybe next time,,, people'll listen,,, altho you could never avoid those people who think they know it all...
Hope you guys have a great day and God Bless... |

I was a Flight Attendant for 13 years and it kind of bugged me. While they think they know it all, the fact is that they aren't setting a good example to the other passengers. I wouldn't want to force them though...
Talking is another matter. That's disruptive. Also, there are some people who have never flown that aircraft or heck, ever and they're babbling away...
The worst though is when the mimick you. Now that really got old. They thought they were so funny and original and they were neither. Usually young guys and I have to admit, it happened less as I got older! Some things about youth you *don't* miss.... |
