Fear of flying. !!! ? |
I've always wanted to fly in an airplane, and now that I will be this Saturday I am deathly afraid. It's not so much anything but the fear of crashing. I think my anxiety is intensified because I will be flying with my 4th month old so if anything happens, he too will be unfortunate. Also my fiance does not have a seat next to me.
How can I learn to deal with this by Saturday? I don't want to end up having a panic attack.
Also, any info on the chances of crashing would be great. [
I'm flying from PA to CA, and I have a stop in Houston. I'll be on each flight for 3 and half hours at a time.] |

I can't recommend this website enough:
http://www.fearofflyinghelp.com/
It covers all the issues you mentioned. It's absolutely free, written by an experienced airline pilot, and I used it when I flew for the first time. I don't think I could have flown without it. I had always thought I would have to have sedatives or alcohol to get through a flight, but I did not, and you wouldn't have to either (I doubt you would want to considering you will be flying with an infant, as I did my first time). I did still have a panic attack boarding the plane and taxiing down the runway, but as soon as we took off I was okay. One of the things the website teaches you is how to deal with panic attacks. Try it out, I promise it is worth it, and you will be just fine. :) |

While you waiting at the gate to board, take some tranquilizers like Xanax, and try to get an aisle seat, and then just sleep during the flight...
(Just observe how calm and relaxed and bored the other passengers sitting around you are, and feel good knowing that THEY are not the least bit afraid...)
But really...you've got nothing to worry about...I flew a lot during my 14 years working for an airline, and some business travelers practically live on airplanes...
It's very routine, and statistically by a long shot, you're far safer in the air on an airplane than you are in a car on the freeway, and I don't see you giving up driving or being a passenger in a car, so...
Just understand that your fear of flying is "groundless..."
Ha! (I just accidently came up with that pun...me so clever...) |

Watch a movie called "Final Destination".
It will really set your mind at ease. |

I flew from the USA to Australia, a 31 hour flight with my five year old son...
I have a fear of flying and everytime I get on a plane, I do some breathing exercises...slow and deep. Luckily for me, my five year old slept for the majority of the trip, which enabled me to do the other thing I always do...
I shut down all thinking and put myself in another place entirely...sort of like a meditated trance....alert enough to take care of my son, if need be, but calm enough not to freak out.
Good luck and try to enjoy your trip...just keep thinking, it won't be much longer and you'll be at your destination.
Also, once everyone is seated, ask the Steward/Stewardess if your husband can be seated next to you and your little one. Most people honestly don't mind changing their seating arrangements. |

I have a little fear too. I am flying on friday the 13th!!! But what my uncle told me who is a pilot is that flying is safer than driving! It sounds crazy. Also If you can bring things along for the ride to keep your mind of the worry. Also if you can relax enough to sleep the time will go by a lot easier. I hope I helped! Good luck...try looking up the chances of crashing on the interenet I bet they are slim. The pilots know what they are doing any more help you can contact me personally. Good luck and Relax! |

ok relax. i am a minor and i am traveling this saturday too! but unnacompanied for 6-7 hours from california to indianapolis! so dont worry, even though i dont feel the same i can still tell you "how do you think the flight attendants feel flying for zillions of hours?" LOL. ask the person next to you if it is ok that he/she and your husband can switch seats. keep a hat on both you and your 4 month old (drafty!). i have been born flying on airplanes. i've been flying since i was born and before, so dont worry. just take deep breaths. try to fall asleep and let your husband hang on to JR. watch the in flight movie or if you have a tv in front of your seat (found mostly in Lufthansa Airplanes, though. I SHOULD KNOW!!! LOL) you can watch that. |

I've flown many times....there is nothing to worry about. Just listen to the safety procedures at the beginning of the flight that the flight attendants will tell you about. Also they pay extra attention to people traveling with young children - so you'll be in great hands. they tell you all the safety procedures specifically to you because you have a young child.
I was also scared of flying the first few times I went when I was quite young. But I was always told - and this is true - that flying is much safer then driving. You are much more likely to be in a car crash then in a plane crash. Hope I helped |

Pocket is right on the xanex.
Talk to your family doctor and get a light dose..he may prescribe you 3 at most.
It will not make you loopy, etc, but you will be calmer. |

first you are anticipating...projecting your fears into the future. The fear is not realistic and not healthy, especially with your child watching. You can make him extremely anxious and afraid. I suggest you reframe your ideas about the airplane, pilot, destination, weather and any other parts of this, to be positive. Then stay in the moment and put your energy into the excitment of the travel.Houston is a beautiful clean airport, it is full of sun with really nice high spaces and art. Really enjoy it. Give your fiancee a chance to be a great father and use the time to relax and read a magazine...order some food, and a nice warm drink...I love flying because I use the time to pauper myself. I wear a plasima and use it as a blanket or pillow, I bring a black out eye mask and a cooling mask and I layer them so I look refreshed after my sleep. Bring some music and earphones and enjoy Mozart & Ocean music... |

Paige, you are actually safer on a commercial airliner than in your car on the way to the airport. There are more people killed in their bathtubs, and more people killed in cars hit by trains than in commercial airliners. It is an artificial mode of travel, but it is safe.
Regards,

You should just pray to God and hope for the best. I'm mean sure it's just about the whole entire country but my friends and my teachers have gone on flights just about that far. |
