Fear of flying? |
I used to love flying when I was a child or in my late teens. Im 25 and now really do not enjoy flying, and the thought of flying bothers me for many months before the flight. I dont freak out, but it is absolutely horrible.
Whats more, I want to visit my Russian girlfriends parents, it has been 2 years and I want to go, but the thought of going on russian airlines and russian jets (who have a poor safety record) so I am REALLY worried. Does anyone know what the odds are on something happening? how many crashes are there a year? What airlines in the west and russia are the best? Can you tip the odds in your favour by picking the right flights etc etc. If Im on an airline with a brilliant safety record I am much less worried! Help please |

Good News.
Those antique Russian built jets have been grounded.
Aeroflot has bought several European Airbus A.320's for use on their routes from western European cities to Russia.
Safety is much better
No big problem anymore.

my advice...go to see your dr and have him/her perscribe you a sedative that will make you drowsy/sleepy for the entire duration of the flight |

There are two books that I recommend for you.
1. Flying without Fear by Duane Brown (Amazon, less than $2)
2. Ask the Pilot by Patrick Smith (Amazon, $1)
The first will help you look at your fear and figure out how to get to the bottom of it. Most people fall into 3 categories - afraid of being in a tight space with nowhere to go, afraid of the plane crashing, or afraid of being high in the sky. Then he has techniques for overcoming your fear.
The second is written by a really savvy pilot. He answers all the questions about safety, why flight attendants do the things they do, how planes work, and other random questions.
As an extra bonus, he provides rankings of the safest airlines, worst crashes, and the differences in aircraft between airlines and between countries. |

Air travel is actually quite safe. If the airline has a good reputation for maintenance and pilot training, the chance for something happening are rare. I don't know much about russian airlines personally, but russian aircrafteaernt that bad. You mostly hear about air incidents on the news because they are big, but they actually don't happen all that often.
Most planes are built for redundancy, and im sure Russian ones have to make at least a certain mark to fall into regulation standards. It is the pilots responsibility to do a walkaround to ensure that their aircraft is airworthy, just as it is the maintenance crews to ensure the same. |

I'm not sure what airline you are taking, but usually in the European countries, there are more crashes than here in the states.
However, your odds are much greater of getting killed in a car accident on your way to the airport than in the actual plane itself.
If you are flying on a Boeing, or an Airbus, then you should be really good. Good luck!! |

it depends on what russian airlines your flying with, but most of the russian airlines now a days flies either boeng or airbus. |

Many major European airlines fly into the larger Russian Cities and a few American airlines fly into Moscow. Also Aeroflot saftey record has been getting alot better. They have a few Boeing and AIrbus's and the newer Russian made airplanes are very safe and realible just as safe as a 757 or A320 etc... The older ones are a little bit less safe but still safe. There has not been a crash in Russia for a large airline for a while now. Russian Aviation might not be as safe as North America or Europe but it is still very safe. Again if you are going to a large russian city like Moscow or St. Pete many european airlines fly there. Also you could always fly into Moscow and take a train. |
