Apologize. If the passenger is a real a**hole about it, offer him some discount certificates. |

Apologize, help him or her clean up.
If he makes a fuss, offer to have the purser come and to discuss it with him or her.
One option is if the passenger has a change of clothes, or for example, for a man if he can simply remove his shirt and stay in his undershirt, I've taken the item and cleaned it myself, then hung it to dry in a closet or near the jumpseats. This would work if there was still a lot of flight time left.
The airplane air is very dry and these items dry quickly once off the person. I had one guy walking around with an airline blanket sarong-style on one flight while his pants dried. He had spilled in a stragically embarassing area. Luckily, he found it as amusing as we did!
For the record, I didn't ever spill directly on anyone. Actually, it's rare. Passengers often spill on themselves and especially with kids around or if they've been drinking. I have squirted a few in my career (opening tops usually). I did help a lot of passengers clean up, though. After a bad bout of turbulence, it was pretty routine to check the cabin for unhappy, spilled upon passengers.
Of course if it's a hot liquid, like coffee, you want to check that no burning has occurred and if it has, aminister First Aid. This is not as obvious as you would think! Some nasty burns can look quite innocent at first and even the passenger doesn't feel much. If you see any red mark, have the passenger immediately run it under cold water or apply cold compresses if not possible to get that part of the body under those tiny sinks.
If it's really bad, have the passenger talk to the purser, like I mentioned earlier. A report can be made and the ground staff contacted ahead of time of the situation and see if they can sort something out as far as compensation goes after landing. If the drinks have a fee, comping one would be a good idea. Also, I'd snag an extra First or Business Class amenity kit to help with clean up and as a small token of apology.
I have to warn you that while spilling on passengers isn't that common, spilling on electrical equipment does happen. The passenger is using the computer and the F/A doesn't see... Be especially careful of any distribution of hot towels. Those can drip on keyboards... |
