A request of a $200 travel voucher would not be outrageous.

The thing about getting home to watch NFL games is a non-issue. Not sure why you would even put that down.

The engine problem thing - Well, it's better to have the engine problem on the ground, than in the air. You aren't really entitled to anything here

"I was told the wrong gate in flight." - Gates change. The information that the crew had may have been the old gate. You aren't entitled to anything here.

What kind of power struggle? The captain has complete command over anything and everything on that aircraft. He or she is the final say. And the crew might have gone over their alloted work hours. Per FAA requirements, the crew is only allowed to be on-duty for so many hours per day. So with the delays, they were probably going to go over their allowed hours for the day. So, that's probably why they had to get the replacement FA's in.

Here is where you might be entitled to compensation for you and your five year old. I would request a $200 future travel voucher for both you and your son.

Keep it reasonable. Don't request $1000 cash money. You aren't going to get it. And an airline is more likely to give you a future travel voucher than a first class upgrade.

Edit: That just sounds like an unprofessional flight crew. In that case, you might be able to go as high as $250-$300 because of the lack of professionalism of the flight crew.

Or maybe ask for a voucher good for one round-trip ticket any where in the 48 contiguous states within the next year. One for you, and one for your child.

It doesn't hurt to write a letter telling the airline that you were not satisfied with their service. I would be specific in telling them what flight number you took and what happened. If you have a frequent flier account, make note of that as the airlines do not want to disappoint their most loyal customers. In the end, you can ask for a travel voucher (can be $300) as compensation for the inconvenience caused. Whether or not the airline will write back or give you a travel voucher is up to them.

First of all, why post this question. You kno no matter what is said... u will still write the letter. Also, they can't ust give refunds. A plane that CRASHED IN THE HUSON, gave their passengers only $1,000. Not 1,00 and a free ticket..... So no.

A letter expressing your dismay and giving the 'lowdown' to superiors is most assuredly in order. Insisting on first class upgrade is not. Asking for compensation for time and trouble may be the best route.

I'd certainly ask for a voucher for a free (or at least discounted) ticket for you and your child to use at a later date. If there were PA announcements made commenting about the service on the plane, the airline can check the black box of that plane, so you'll have some proof (not saying your lying, just saying that many people try to get away with getting vouchers for no good reason and it wouldn't hurt to have some proof).

As you said, in light of the Hudson River plane crash, your flight situation does seem pretty mild, but it's certainly not the norm. I highly suggest contacting the airline.

[It may surprise you to know that at the age of 17, I had over 50,000 miles of air travel under my belt, and I'd been delayed and had luggage "lost" (it was later delivered to me) multiple times. Just wanted to clarify that not all kids are inexperienced travelers. :)]

I am sorry but the airline really won't care. You were certainly inconvenienced but not that badly. You will not get anything out of the airline.

Not a very good flight experience indeed.

Is it the airlines fault? Yes probably, they are responsible for having working airplanes and crew. It's not beyond their control like thunderstorms.

So of course you should write (not e-mail) customer service and include all details. Be polite but firm. Suggest a reasonable compensation: travel vouchers or upgrade vouchers.

u call this flight from hell? thats not even close. out of all the passengers, u r gonna make a big deal out of this. ur actually taking ur time to do all the calculations and crap, just get over it. no need for a damn free first class. soon people like u gonna make all these airlines go bankrupt.
