Flights can be stressful and boring... but it can be otherwise too! I just travelled for about twenty hours last November 1, from Asia to Europe. Lucky for me because I had a companion that i love the most, had great food, and have all in one electronic gadget in plane that can be as movie screen, mp3, playstation and a lot more.

The following helps to make the flight better:

1. Chew gum or suck on small pieces of hard candy. This help alleviate pressure on your ears. If taking a small baby, have the baby suck on a bottle or pacifier until the plane is no longer changing altitude.

2. During the flight, take the time to reset your watch or phones to accommodate the next time zone where you will be landing. Remember, if you are changing flights in a different time zone, that airport will be scheduled according to the time zone the airport is in.

3. Relax by breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth when you feel like you are tensing up.

4. Apply lotion to your hands or face to relieve dehydrated skin due to the dry air in the plane. Keep your favorite lip balm handy too.

5. Get up and stretch when this is allowed on the airplane, especially for long flights. This helps to relieve tense muscles and promotes circulation.

6. Use both hands when you must retrieve objects from the overhead compartments to help prevent muscle sprains or strains.

Note: Avoid sitting for long periods with legs crossed. This cuts off circulation to the legs.

I bring a book to read in the airport, so I can immerse myself in something intelligent and not be bothered by rude and impatient people around me. I also take a pillow and sleep for the entire flight. Fabulous!

Try walking around. Meet people. You are concentrating on the wrong thing. Do you hear the noise of the car engine or the passengers when you drive? Is it also hell? Focus on postive things. If it is too crowded on the plane , get up and move around. Earphones are great. Besides music you could also listen to audio book tapes. Better yet, record your own voice reading a book in advance. .

sleep or take a movie in your portable dvd player.

forty and fabulous
Try doing it with two young children, then ask me?

Pure_Alpha
Take the very first flight of the day.

Yeah, its a huge hassle to get up and go to the airport for 6 or 7 AM, but you'll leave on time and make all your connections. You never lose your luggage either.

Sugar
Read or sleep. Sometimes I find someone to have a good conversation with.

I do a lot of long-distance flying.

I always use large noise-canceling headphones.

I bring several inflatable pillows so I can support my body to my liking (including one for under my butt).

I have short legs so I bring a small foldable footrest.

Plus iPod, DVD player, books, water, comfort snacks, eyeshades, lip balm, moisturizer, slippers.

Jenn
First off I request in emergency exit seat. There is more room in those. IF not, when I get on the plane I ask the flight attendant if there is any extra seats if I can move. (I am extremely tall and get uncomfortable easily) The Earphones thing is a good idea. Being in an exit row helps you to not be by children too since you are required to be 16 years old. I also like to fly out of a smaller airport than the bigger. I live in tyler and it really does make a difference to fly out of here instead of driving to dallas. Security is horrible at the bigger airports. You also can go online to your plane(s) schedule and get gates for connections ahead of time.

I also recommend bring any snacks (non liquid) with you in case you get stuck on a non moving plane. Get something to drink when it is time to board. I have been stuck on many a planes without being able to get off. You get hungry quick.

For easier security pass through...take the bare minimum on the plane. I know people now a days think they have to worry about lost luggage. It is rarer to have lost luggage these days than to hurt yourself(Being hit by heavy carry ons) or stuck at security. Don't put any liquids whatsoever in you carryon. It just slows you down. Limit electronics. And wear slip on shoes. All airports require you to take them off these days. And put your license..boarding pass..money, keys in one thing. You can always have it in few..and you don't have to search through your wallet/purse for them.

And if you have connections...check the maps of the airports. It is so nice to prepare yourself to know where the bathrooms are...gates and how to get to and fro. The knew skylinks and shuttles make it quick and easy. It is so much easier to relax when you know where you are going.

And...when you check in use the electronic check in. Soo much quicker.

I hope I helped

hi, well i'm scared to fly but if i want to see my son in california i have to fly. so i bring lots of things to read & also i watch the movie on the plane. if u have anykind of relaxing music or even medicine like valium then take it when u get on the plane. if u don't have valium then ask your primary care doctor for a script & tell the doctor why u asked & i'm sure that u will get one. if not then buy some benedryl & take 1 tablet so u can sleep. that's my answer for you. bb, nobrethequeen

Learn how to fly.. Avoid lost bags by carrying on. Carry only important things in your pockets and wear shoes that slip on and off easily. Bring things to keep yourself occupied, etc. If you eliminate as much of the things that can stress you out you'll make the overall trip less painfull.

Ride 1st class! Just kidding, it can not only be expensive but still sometimes a pain. Good thinking with the earphones, and try to do anything to distract yourself. From music to movies, the most obvious choice. Also, if i want to read a book but it is too noisy, for just about 10 dollars you can get a voice recording of an entire book, so you just follow along while blocking out the noise!
Hope this works for you, and bring some advil !

Silent Bob
K so you got the music down. That's pretty much all I do. Music and sleep. Some comedy such as dane cook is GREAT for long flights.
Good luck!

Xanax; soo necessary for long flights!!

sammy
Things I bring along: mp3 player, noise eliminating earphones, travel pillow, good book, laptop with dvds, an extra shirt/jacket just in case it gets cold

Misc things to do: if you're flying by yourself book an aisle seat (especially on long haul flights), drink lots of water (flying is dehydrating), try your best to get an exit row seat if you're flying coach (more leg room)

Robert
I drink

I read magazines, watch the movies if there are some, and bring snacks.

arklatexrat
Nothing earth-shatteringly innovative, just basic common sense.
Use the bathroom before you get on the plane.
Make sure you have gum so your ears won't pop on takeoff/landing.
Take a magazine or book to read.
Wear comfortable clothes (shoes that slip on/off easily for security check!)
Don't take prohibited things and pack as light as you can.
Keep some small bills and change handy for tipping valets, taxi fare, smart cart rentals, etc.
Make sure your cell phone is charged up before you leave & try to have your ground transport figured out ahead of time, or at least know enough about the destination terminal & your ground destination to ask intelligent questions and get directions.
Take Dramamine or Advil if you get motion sickness or headaches from flight.
Take hand lotion and hand sanitizer--the recycled air tends to dry out skin, and you never know where those complimentary items have been!
If the flight isn't full, see about moving to an empty row for more room to spread out.
Make sure you set your watch for the correct time zone where you're headed (or be able to do the math in your head!)

HOW ABOUT A LIST OF THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO?

Take a Laptop onboard...

watch a movie
listen to your favourite music
play a long game
take a good rest, with ear plugs on
read an interesting book or magazine
do your daily planning for the next few weeks
take a few glasses of champagne to take your mind off all the fatigue and free up your self
