Just be you. Go for the stars!

Take an MP3 player (like an iPod) and listen to your favorite music. The airline will let you play it once you are in the air or take a lap top with some games on it, same in the air rule applies. Now what to do when taking off and landing because you have to shut these electronic devices down? Take a book or magazine or newspaper and read them. Get the idea? Do something that takes your mind off the flight itself. It is not going to crash. The car you ride in has a better chance of an accident than any airline. Worst case, go see a doctor and get a couple of pills like Xanax or Valium and take one before boarding. I don't recommend this approach but some people need them. Just do something to forget you are on a jet. It works! |

Every time I get into a car and drive on the highway I think that something terrible might happen to me. (Seriously.) Statistically, flying's far safer. |

wow i used to be scared of airplanes and had the same problem as you and then i rode one agian and loved it!!!! My tips are that you don't think of the worse case senario think of something other than that like your going somewhere and your going to have fun. There are hardly plane crashes or anything all there is are some bumpy rides but who cares. |

The way I look at it, if it is my time to go, then it is my time to go. If I'm supposed to die today, I'm going to die; if I happen to get on an airplane then that's how I will die, and if I try to play it safe and skip the plane, I'll die falling down the stairs in my home. You can't change the "when" you die, you can only change the "where" and the "how." |

I know what you mean. I recently flew out to the East Coast & back. It was my first flight since I was 3 years old.
The possibility of the plane crashing or being hijacked was never far from my mind. But statistically, flying is about the safest way to travel. And if one good thing came out of 9/11, air travel is probably the safest it's ever been, although the added security can be a nuisance. In fact, the most dangerous part of my whole trip was the drive to & from the airports.
Other things can be unsettling to those who are unfamiliar. You may be able to see the ground falling away beneath you on takeoff or rising up slowly as the plane prepares to land. You'll probably feel a bump as it touches down. You may encounter turbulence or air currents during flight, which can make for a rough ride, but it's usually short-lived.
It helped me to continually remind myself how safe flying really is. The flight crew, especially the flight attendants, were courteous & helpful, which helped to calm my fears.
To sum it up:
Look at the statistics of flying vs. driving.
Look at the heightened security measures.
Express your concerns to a flight attendant or another frequent flyer, maybe a fellow passenger. You'll usually find them to be sympathetic & helpful.
If it's overwhelming, just take a nap on the plane, if possible.
If you're so inclined, pray. If you're not, this might be a good time to start.
I hope this helps. |
