Stacey, you have never left Oahu by plane? Girl, you are going to have SO much fun!!! I love Kona =]
In order to calm nerves, have EVERYTHING ready to go the night before you leave. Last minute packing always makes me all squirrelly. Get to the airport early so that you aren't rushing around, and can sit in the gate lobby and veg out with a book or a magazine for a bit. Once you get on the plane, pop some gum in your mouth to help you pop your ears on takeoff and landing. Try and relax when the plane takes off. You'll probably be a bit nervous, but try and think of all the fun things you guys will be doing once you land. Once in the air, have a cocktail if you are still a little tense. That always helps =] Listen to some music, read a book and just enjoy the ride!
have so much fun on your trip!! |

take some chewy gum for when the plane takes off and lands it will help your ears pop, other wise it could be quite pain full it they dont pop.
just relax flying is the only way to travel |

You might get a window seat and enjoy the view.
Expect some noise and a bump or two...it is normal. The wings may change shape to operate better...and flaps moved up and down.
Deep breathing will help and having something to distract you...like puzzles and books etc. Especially pleasurable authors. Read a funny book. You'll find your stress melting away with each breath!
You can listen to soothing music on an Ipod. You can try to close your eyes..then again seeing what is going on may be interesting.
Don't drink coffee/coke. The caffeine might make you jittery.
Benadryl an hour before or a couple squirts of Dristan might help you clear your ears..if you have a cold or sinus issues. You really need to drink a lot of water to compensate for the water loss from the plane and the decongestant.
Humor...Lighten up and feel less stress. Calm over chaos is the phrase of the day. Begin by trying to find humor in the worst of situations. Blow the situation way out of proportion, just to make yourself laugh. Make the serious look ridiculous. When you reach the point of absurdity, you can then begin to melt and calm.
Mostly if you distract yourself...during take off and landings... the rest of the flight you will hardly notice you are in the air.
I love flying...we own a plane..and live at a private airport. |

remember these simple facts-
1- pilots go through more years of training to receive their commercial pilot's license then the average doctor spends in med. school (these guys know what they're doing).
2- you run a MUCH higher risk of getting in an automobile accident then you do a plane crash.
3- you are far more likely to be struck by lightning on a clear day then you are to be involved in a plane crash.
4- going through turbulence in a plane is just like driving your car down a road with a lot of pot holes. It may seem really bad- but the aircraft is built to bounce around A LOT.
Hope this helps. Good luck and ENJOY your first flight. |

I live on Oahu too, although grew up on the mainland, so I've had long flights before.
You are smart starting with a short flight-you'll barely be up in the air before you'll land again! I'd probably get a book to read during your flight. If you get into books like I do, you won't notice a thing!! But if you don't like to read, just sit back in your seat and as the plane takes off and climbs, lean back, close your eyes and breathe in and out deeply. You might even fall asleep!! That's the easiest time to fall asleep on the plane-during takeoff. The flight will be landing before you know it! You'll be fine! good luck! |
