This might be an odd answer, but relax and go with it for a moment. Think about whether you hate flying because your ears hurt, or whether your ears hurt because you hate flying. Hopefully, you are headed to London for a reason that makes the travel worth it. If so, you have a reason to want to feel better about flying and not have to worry about discomfort.
The first thing to do is realize that you can release your anxiety, just like you brought it on. Maybe, like me, you got an earache on a flight when you were really young, before you were able to figure out how to take care of yourself, and now you just can't separate flying from the idea of earaches. An earache (actually ALL physical discomfort) is an indicator of an emotional tension that didn't get resolved, and when you realize you can release it, you will discover that you have fantastic control over your experience. Play in your mind all the reasons about this trip that make you feel good. When you come across a thought that brings you anxiety or a negative feeling, pretend it is an item on a buffet that you don't care for. Don't focus on it. Instead, keep moving and see what you'd prefer on down the line. Just one or two good-feeling reasons are enough to give you a little ammo to remind yourself whenever the anxiety comes back, but the more you can find, the better.
Now that you feel a bit better about actually traveling, figuring out the physical part will be much easier. Once you decide you actually WANT to go on this trip, you may even find the solution comes to you intuitively, or in a dream.
When I was younger, I regularly got earaches (usually on the descent) that were really painful. I'm pretty sure they were sinus-related, as I often had allergies or colds that kept me congested, and the mucus made it difficult for fluids in my sinus cavities to adjust themselves as cabin pressure in the airplane changed on ascent and descent. If this sounds like it might be the issue, there are several things you can do that could help. Avoid milk and cheese products for a day or two before flying. These can thicken mucus and make it harder to clear. If you have a decongestant that works like a charm for you, take them in advance of flying, giving them enough time to get working before take off, and time another one for the landing. Drink lots of water. Stay hydrated before, during, and after the flight. Flying can dry you out, and that makes mucus thicker too. If you're adventurous, try a cup of hot water with little lemon juice, honey, and a pinch of cayenne pepper the morning of the flight. You could add a crushed clove of fresh garlic in there, it's great for colds! Lemon and cayenne are both great at cutting mucus. Keeping it thin and fluid is key! Now it can move around easily in your head as the air-pressure changes. Now the gum-chewing has a way better chance of working.
I hope these suggestions help you. Remember, first, figure out how to feel better about the trip. That might actually be enough for the physical symptoms to go away altogether. But if not, you've got a few tips here on how to make the trip a whole lot more comfortable.
Relax! People fly all the time. It's actually a very safe way to travel. If you're well prepared and relaxed because you know you've got all your bases covered, you might actually find you love to fly! You can do this!

Ear plugs baby. I'm in the same boat as you. I flew to TX and when I got off the plane I thought I'd gone permanently deaf. But after I plugged my ears up I experienced no pain and it worked just great! :)

well,
you should take medicine and eat mint candies and wear those ear muff things they give you listen to your ipod.

i hate flying too. i ate the smell of the airplane since i was eight.. i hate it i just dont think about it and always keep the barf bag close to me if you need one.. ? also keep some magasines in your bags and read them during the flight. Bring some snacks and DONT THINK ABOUT THE PAIN. :] i try not to too. and wear those crappy ear muffs they give you. they really help and press your fingers against your ear with that flimsy thing close to your ear and keep swallowing your saliva... that's what i do :P

Good luck.
Hope you have a good flight

Hey, my little sister has the same problem. Just try to see the doctor before you go, he may be able to give you some medicine to release the pressure. Alternatively, try sucking boiled sweets instead of chewing gum. Everytime my sister chewed, the problem got even worse and she cried the whole duration of the flight. The best thing to do, is to try and stay calm, suck plenty of boiled sweets, and take some earphones and an iPod - that way the music might distract you from the popping - might even send you to sleep - then you can miss the whole experience! wahay! Good Luck :)

In any drug store you can find something called ear planes. They're special ear plugs that keep your ear canals open during takeoff and landing.

Take a Benedryl to dry out your sinuses.

Instead of chewing gum, close your mouth, hold your nose and blow whenever your ears start to feel stuffy.

Tell the flight attendant that you have trouble with your ears. See if she'll bring you a hot drink to sip a little while before you start to land.

If you're having trouble, let her know and she can bring you some cups with paper towels in them that she's poured boiling water on. Hold them over your ears and let the heat help open your ears.

Please wear ear plugs! I know how you feel. While on a flight from WA state to NJ I experienced both of my ears plugging up. I had been sick with a cold a couple of weeks prior to the flight and didn't think anything of it. I stayed in NJ for 10 days and even my brother in law (who is a doctor) gave me shots, antibiotics and inhalers and nothing worked. On the flight home I wore ear plugs and still felt the painful pressure but they did help. My ears finally unplugged a month later. So please wear ear plugs to protect your ears. It's all about the air pressure and the damage it can do to your ears and hearing. Good Luck!

You need to talk to your docs about this because of your age advice would not be the right thing here with us.

Smooches ear plugs or i-pod the whole trip?

Morgan[♥]Kaye
Uhm, i'd say that you should chew gum lots of it i know you say it doesn't work, but you should still do it. maybe you could take some Benadryl so you could sleep the whole time.

Get a sleeping pill and take it just like the minute your about to board the plane and hope you just get knocked out cold till the flights over.

try to wear ear plugs or carrying Excedrin tension headache to relieve the pain. put the ear plugs on before you get on the plane. go to an ear nose and throat doctor before your flight and tell them your problem and see what the doctor suggest you do or maybe there is something he can give you. lots of luck.

Chewing doesn't help, swallowing does. Suck on some boiled sweets during take-off/landing. Another trick is to pinch your nostrils closed, and keeping your mouth closed, blow out gently to equalise the pressure in your ears.

Maybe ask your doctor for a mild sedative so you can at least be relaxed, and possibly sleep through the flight?

try to sleep before hand. try meditating if you can were you block everything out and only focus on your breathing. try taking a sleeping pill and just sleeping though the whole thing. try taking medication to help with the ear pain it might be an infection. try keeping your head between your legs. try distracting yourself or try knocking yourself out but I do not suggest that.

Ki$sA
you should try yawing and im sure theres medication for that. Also, do something to keep your mind off it! music, movie, read....

I think you unable to equalize the pressure You need to see a ear nose and throat Dr.

I would say just practice popping your ears and maybe even get some medicine that makes you drowsy and helps with pain. The reason your ears hurt is because of the change of air pressure. There is a lot less air pressure up in the sky and when u don't pop your ears you're ear drums stretch because of unequal pressure which cause the pain.

I personally used to get this a lot when I was younger so I know where ur coming from.

Just constantly open your jaw until u hear that subtle pop that comes from your ears. When u do this your ears shouldn't hurt at all. If u do this and still have problems then take the medicine and try to sleep because its a lot harder to feel pain when your unconscious.

Oh yeah chewing gum does help if u pop your ears while your chewing but if u don't open your jaw wide enough your ears may not pop which may have been the problem before. Then again your ear infection may have something to do with it but if thats the case then I dnt think its the flying. Well anyways I wish u the best of luck.

well maybe you have a long term ear infection.
you should really get them checked out before your plane ride.

i had an inner ear infection for about 3 years. it didnt hurt unless i applied pressure to them. (underwater, or in planes)

if not, then try wearing earplugs while taking off.

hope this helped

actually more than the ache u have , u are phobic to that kinda pain. well though it is not recommended , the best thing u can do is take ur music player and put some music with moderately high volume and plugin ear phones in ur ears. ear phones must be the rubberones . and think about someone u like while u r flying . or atlest when the flight is landing or taking off

i hope this will defenitely work coz it worked for me ..

good luck
