I've been flying American and American Connection weekly for about six months now because of a business assignment. I've had few problems, and those problems that do come up are handled rather quickly.

I've had no trouble getting upgrades and can easily use my frequent flyer miles. I've had two issues with delayed luggage in the past six months, and truthfully that isn't bad considering all the people that connect through DFW and ORD, where I usally connect.

When I get weather delays, they are good at giving out information when they have it and making arrangements when they can.

On the downside, I think American could hire a few more people to assist with customer service--I'd pay happily $10 more per ticket.

All in all, I recommend AA for any trip that they are competitive on.

I have flown on a number of airlines. American is really no better or worse than the other majors. I would rank them generally in the same category as Northwest, Delta, United. A big benefit is that they seem to have lots of flights in the event that weather or airplane problem causes cancellations.

I fly American Airlines all the time. In general, it's a decent airline, but all of their flights seem overbooked and way too full. Hard to get my upgrades. Some of their flight attendants seem to have attitudes as well. However, they have the BEST frequent flyer program on the market. I've flown my family to places absoluetly FREE by cashing in my frequent flyer miles that I've accumulated.

I flew with American airlines 12 years ago as well as American Eagle. They lost my luggage which was headed for South Africa , one bag went to Puerto Rico , the other to Paris. Thank goodness SAA paid for clothing and toiletries for me because AA didn't and didn't even refund my binoculars that got stolen.

However compared to South West airlines which I flew recently AA was fantastic! SW was rude except for their ground agents who were fantastic. Will I fly SW ever again only if it 's the absolutely last airline on earth.

I usually fly American whenever I travel for business reasons (that means about once a week)

The good things about American:
1. They usually have a lot of flights on any given route. If you have any problems, they can solve it pretty quickly.
2. Their frequent flier program is one of the best
3. They have good luggage handling
4. See #1. A lot of airlines have one / two flights a day on some routes. American usually has twice as many. This gives you a lot of options

The not-so-good
1. Don't expect warm-and-cuddly service. They are efficient, not nice.
2. No food. No blankets. No pillows.

Flew with them a couple of times, and the flight and service as excelent. So yeah, I would recomend it.
However do not expect too much from the catering.

American Airlines is the worst airline I have traveled on. Left me stranded in Chicago with two babies due to their error, and then the flight attnds were so rude to us on the flight home from Germany. The delay on the outbound cost us at least $700 in hotels, cars, lost money on hotel reservations in Germany since we go there two days late. I had to write three letters to be given one travel voucher not worth a quarter of our expenses.
Plus, everyone I have known that travels a portion of their trip on AA, says they are the only airline not willing to work with them. One friend who was traveling on both Delta and AA, got charged $100 fare difference incorrectly by AA. AA refused to help my friend, so a Delta customer care rep called AA on his behalf to ask for the refund. The AA customer service rep. admitted to the Delta rep. they were incorrectly charged, but refused to authorize a refund, even though she had the authority. In the end, DELTA compensated my friend with $100 in Delta dollars, for Americans mistake and unwilling customer service.
I must not be the only one, because there is a web site devoted to AA haters...

I just flew with American Airlines last week. And let me tell you...It was the worst experience in my life! I traveled from Baton Rouge to DC. Well the trip to DC went smoothly, but the trip back was pure hell. Our plane was delayed in DC b/c of weather in Chicago. When we finally do arrive in Chicago, we have to run which seemed like 2 miles to watch the attendant close the door to our flight back to Baton Rouge. There was no communication with the flights in Chicago to let them know that passagerners were on a delayed flight and were running to get to the terminal. (There were 12 of us that were left) We are frantic trying to let staff know we were delayed and really needed to get on the flight. In the meantime, our luggage is being put on the flight to Baton Rouge while we stand in the terminal helpless. It took almost 30 minutes for someone to help us and when she finally did decide to grace us with her presence she was rude and let us know that it was not their fault that the initial flight was delayed. We were put on stand by list for another flight that left almost 6 hours later. When the time did come to board this flight, we had to wait until everyone boarded and then it was a lottery, well luckily I was chosen, but my name was typed in wrong, so it took me almost having a break down for them to sympathize and see that it was not my fault. Well I finally get on the flight, which takes me to Dallas not Baton Rouge. In Dallas, there was a flight to Baton Rouge, but I missed that one as well because the flight from Dallas was delayed and again there was no communication. I had to be put on a stand by list AGAIN and finally arrived in Baton Rouge around 12midnight. (Mind you, I woke up at 5am for the first flight) In addition, of course to top it off, my luggage was nowhere to be found. I finally did receive it 2 days later...In a nutshell...I would not recommend it to anyone!

I believe American Ailines is the best Domestic International Airline in the USA.

1) One of the best Frequent Flyer Programs in the world!
2) They have routes all over the USA and the world with their allicance. (I can use my FF miles to go somewhere interesting like Europe, Africa, or Asia)
3) They have multiple flights giving you a chance to make the flight to your destination because of delays.

Cons
1) I find AA is about $10-$25 more expensive on some routes.
2) Customer service has gone down hill, but it is no worse than any of the other major airlines, but I blame Soutwest and the low cost carriers with that.

I have been flying with AA for almost 20 years since I was a child. I remember the customer service and meals 12 years ago and it was very very good.

With the rise of low cost carriers that has gone out the window. Being on time is of utmost necessity because things are booked tighter to get more routes. They will not re-open a gate once closed, no airline does anymore.

Note to EndlessLaughter, I symphatize with your horendous trip, but do you seriously believe you would have had a different result on another airline? No airline will delay a flight for 12 people because of delays caused by weather. It would not be fair to the 120+ people on the plane.

I too have had such a flight and had to be wait listed twice. I had been up 24 hours until I arrived at my destination. I live in Frankfurt, Germany and I was flying home for Christmas to San Antonio, but Chicago weather was terrible. After 2 waitlist on delayed flights extending me to Dallas, I got home 2:30AM. If it were any other airline I wouldn't have made it home for Christmas. I was tired, but home with my family.

I flew with them about a year ago, and the experience was awful. For starters, we were stuck on the ground in the plane for 2 hours because something was wrong with the toilet. Then, the only food they served cost $3 and it was a box consisting of stale chips, nasty salsa that looked like ketchup, beef jerky and cookies or something sweet.
The delay caused me and my party to miss our connecting flight to which the responded basically with an 'oh well, sorry' even though we made it clear that we would not be able to rent our car or eat (we landed at 1am).
Also, the attendants treated us like sh** the whole time we were on the plane and acted like it was some kind of hassle to answer our questions. I'll never fly with them again.
