yeah....
i'm terrified of them ever since that day when....
i was on an airplane coming back to new york from tokyo, japan, and suddenly, the plane gives this really mighty jolt, and then it drops slightly, then the covers on the ceiling pop off and the oxygen air mask thingies come dangling out....
i heard that whenever that happens, you better be ready to die, so i was really, really scared at that time.
it turns out it was just a technical error, and the oxygen masks weren't even supossed to come out, it was just a LOT of turbulence, but that experience keeps me far away from planes.
hope this helps :0) |

Yeah..i was flying from Nairobi, Kenya to London and we experienced extreme turbulance. The overhead bins were popping open, bags were falling everywhere, people were ducking to dodge the bags. Yeah..it was pretty freaky! Thats the only time something bad has happened though..so if your scared, don't be! |

I was about 10 or 11 years old when it happened and it scared me to death. We had just climbed to cruising altitude when all of a sudden we made a quick steep decent. I do not know if we were in another plane's airspace or if we hit a massive air pocket, but it sure was scary. |

The first time I flew i was scared to death. I hate heights and found myself in this dream world as I was buckling up for take off. I watched as the plane cruised down the run way and on lift off grabbed the armrest and throw myself back as the plane lifted. I started crying and grabbing my husband who was very empathetic. For about 5-10 minutes I was making a high pitch squealing sound, then the plane leveled out and I glanced out the window at the clouds and all was OK. it was like looking at a TV screen with nothing but beautiful clouds and scenery. The turbulence sucked but it turned out OK. |

I will not name the airline nor the starting point and destination of the airtravel I am going to talk about since the matter was amicably settled .
On that fateful flight I got in with some misgiving though I could not pinpoint it. I put it down to the fatigue which comes through frequent airtravel and settled down in my seat.Next to me (on the window side)was a lively young lady chattering away all the time though it sounded as enjoyable background music.Madame was perhaps travelling by air for the first time and her nervousness further deepened my gloom. After the plane took of and we settled in our seats up rose a young masked man from his front seat and brandhshing a revolver declared in ominous tones that the plane is being hijacked. At first we all thought that it was a joke since the fellow did not seem to have colleagues occupying vantage seats and standing up.Somebody said as much but the masked man cut him short ominously saying that the revolver was real and the bullets inside were also genuine and still if the douting Thomas had any doubts he was quite prepared to satisfy his cuiosity by firing at him. The man clamped up like a bag tightly shut. The masked man then summoned the airline staff and conveyed his threat to them.He directed that the plan's route should be changed tox x x x x . He promised to get down there and quietly walk away provided the staff and the passangers ket mum over the incident. The airline staff tried in vain to tell him that the plane just did not have enough petrol for that long trip and also arguing technical difficulties but the man would have no excuses. They then swerved the plane keeping their fingers crossed. An hour passed in tension. Nobody had any snacks brought in by the airhostess.I wanted to go to the bathroom but the man threatened to act if anybody moved from his/her seat,My next-chair neighbourer almost fainted but kept up turning the beads of her rosary furtively. Outwardly at least her gaze was fixed on the masked man though she might have been seeking god with her inner eye.As the revised destination drew nearer there was a cautious relaxation in the atmosphere though it was anybody's guess to what extent the masked man would keep his promise. Then as the plane started to descend the man put back the revolver in its holster further reducing the tension and then suddenly he began to cry uncontrollably. Everybody was dumbfounded. A Air Marshall who had been taken by surprise aned was chaffing crouched to pounce upon the man who has now taken off his mask. A senior passanger who was in the near seat got up and put his hand on the man's back signalling the Air Marshall to hold over. He solicitiously enquired of the man what was the matter. Between paroxyms of gried the man blurted out that he was running for shelter away from his country's enemies who were in hot pursuit. And he had no time to lose and so had thought of this desperate plan.Even the airline staff was touched by the apparent genuineness of the man. The air-hostess pointed out that on disembarking he would be arrested by the airport security and there would be hell to pay. The Air Commodore, however, said that he has not as yet reported the reason for diversion of the route saying that there was mechanical trouble and sought permission to land and was granted. He appealed to us passanger whether they were game if he quietly let that passanger down, make some sham excuses and then took off and promised not to make a scene. All joined inthe agreement. The plane landed .The man apologised to all the passangers for his rude behaviour. The man who had at first phoo-phooed the threat now began boasting that he knew all along that this was a sham hijacker. The lady next to me claimed that her prayers had paid off and there was a beatific smile on his face. All the passangers gave the ex-masked man a resounding send-off.The plane resumed the flight shortly. It is true that all is well that ended well but the experiene was no less scary so long as it lasted But what was more remarkable was the understanding of the senior air staff and the goodwill of all the passangers. Otherwise the sudden relaxation of the tension could have had unforeseen consequences. One would have been that I would not been here to narrate the incident which is not recorded anywhere. |

Coming back from Okinawa to Osaka this spring the plane made a really hard landing which really jolted all the passengers.
Also, nearly every time I fly from Japan to the States I hit heavy turbulence on the east coast just as we begin to go over land. Sometimes the overhead compartments open, and small bags fall out. I think a falling bag killed someone not too long ago. |
