Hey, I'm going to America!?

I live in England and I'm going to America on holiday, I've been on long flights before, but thought it might be quite interesting to learn what others pack in their hand luggage.

For example: to freshen up, to eat, to keep you amused.

And on top of that, is there anything you have learnt from travelling? For example nice service/food etc :-)

thanks xxxx

I've never been on a flight that long. The last flight I went on was Oakland - Chicago. About 4-6 hours I think.

I packed a book.
A change of clothes.
Cigarettes (I'm not a smoker anymore, but I was at the time)
CD player and my two favorite mix cds.
A notepad and pen.
A Hersheys bar with almonds.
A water bottle.

I've learned that it's very, very important to have plenty of money because the stupid airlines charge for everything these days - even peanuts. And if you're hungry, you're screwed if you don't have money. On that flight my brother and I forgot to eat breakfast. We were sitting in the row right behind business class. Some pilot was sleeping, and he got served his very yummy smelling breakfast. And it just sat there. Right in our view, smelling very good. And he left it there - the entire flight. Painful.

I always keep important papers with me like passport, ID's, and so..
In second hand, FOOD! Since I don't know when and how many times will I be hungry, I pack a considerable amount of food, water and soda.
Then first aid kid.
And finally something to read, not just one magazine, but an I pod and a good book, newspaper, my laptop with movies, dvd's.

I have a big hang luggage lol but I get bored or need something during my flights, so it's better that way.

^^ Have a nice flight!

Welcome! I'm glad you are traveling here, I hope to some day have the opportunity to go to GB! For the flight, it's only about 10 hours from heathrow>jfk if I remember correctly, not TOO bad, but you can bring a change of socks, a toothbrush and some soap (mind the liquids rules of the FAA) when I went to China, I felt dirty from flying to long, but after a trip to the washroom, I brushed my teeth and changed my socks and shirt, new deodent felt 110% better. They usually have movies, or portable movie players for rent on long international flights, and they had a good mix of family rated movies, read a little bit, but got bored of that quickly. You won't have any problems finding food to eat here LOL (eatting is what we're good at). Don't be afraid to explore a bit, I was nervous when I went abroad and I got scared to travel far from the hotel, but America's for the most part safe to go where you want and not get hassled or in trouble. a word of advise, we do have rough area's, but your common sense will tell you when you are in one, just avoid urban areas with people that look rough and you'll be okay! I'm willing to bet, as soon as you open your mouth, you'll be drowning with questions from curious people. I hate to say it, but a majority of American's are ignorant and may ask you dumb questions. Keep in mind most americans couldn't point out GB on a world map. But friendly non the less. OHH, forgot to mention, if you land in New York, keep in mind, New York City is a world of it's own, the people, the language, the food, everything. Very fast paced, very much NOT like the rest of the country :-P So don't form any opinions the first day ;-) If you want to ask me anything, Id be glad to help you, e-mail me (mcgenetics AT the hotmail domain) and if you're traveling alone I can even give you an American phone number to call if you need help from someone in the states.

Have Fun! Can't wait to have you!

Take a bunch of magazines, gameboy or somethign like that, an mp3 player--- it will be really boring on the plane. Also, I'd suggest taking a small blanket---my feet are always cold on airplanes.

America-- depends which part you're going to. You'll love it.

I travel a lot overseas! Pack lite..you dont want to be tied down with too much luggage. And bring a good book to read on the plane. If you are traveling to the midwest make sure you have a good coat. It starts getting cold this time of year. The flight from England to US is only about 5 to 6 hrs. They feed you two meals and a snack so no need to pack food. Have fun!

For long journeys, you should definitely pack some candies and mints. I'd bring toothbrush and wet wipes for my face, since liquids are not allowed to be carried in carry ons anymore. There's always tv programmes that you can watch to keep yourself amused, but if you're not a tv person, then bring some mags and book that you can buy at the airport.

Well to tell you the truth there are many things you can bring and cannot like you cannot bring a bottle of water, lighter, anything that looks suspicious and if you carry a purse or a bag make sure you do not have anything liquid like eyeliner lip gloss cause when I traveled a lot of people had to leave some belongings sometimes you have to get a ziplog bag to put like for eample glasses etc that is what I had done

oh yea youre not allowed to bring drinks/aerosol cans/ etc the plane from what i hear. airports are really strict nowadays

nico

Depends on airline and also what class are you flying at eg ecomony/premium ecomony business class or first class? if your travelling business and first class then you will get the silver service we flew with delta on first and there service was absoutely brilliant couldn't fault it at all.

The airlines usually give you a wet towel to freshen up it is hot and it is nice and refreshing they usually do that after you have had your dinner.

The airline gives you a menu and you pick whatever you want to have on the menu.

I usually take my nintendo DS or a couple of mini games I had bought from the airport or what the movies that they usually have on the little portable tvs which are on each seat.

You can pack limited stuff in your hand luggage excluding drinks little gas cylinders for your her curls any electrical stuff can't go in your hand luggage, scissors knifes nail failers, lighters, nail clippers allsorts can't go in.

Also check with the airline what you can and can't take in hand luggage.

i learnt from when i went tenerife last year, dont carry one of those cheap ciggarette lighters in your pocket, when we got to 32.000 feet it exploded in my T-shirt pocket, it was a stunner lol, i thoght i had been shot with a gun, everyone came running to help me, turned out it was my lighter, and it was freezing cold.lol

Miss Sis a Wis
Sit in first class from what I hear!

Really? I'm going to ENGLAND for the first time ever!

Can you bring food on a flight? I didn't think you could...maybe I'm just a moron who can't remember anything about regulations. To keep me amused - definitely a DVD player/iPod.

I USED to bring a Dr. Pepper with me every time I flew, but that's not allowed anymore.

I learned from traveling...that...Germans really don't like Americans who pronounce German words wrong. I'M SORRY, GERMANY!! I was only a Junior in high school!

Hah, don't pack a water bottle; American airports will freak out!

Let's see here... some new magazines, my CD player, a CD album of my favorite bands (many from your side of the lake!), a bag of pretzels or Goldfish crackers, and my spool knitting stuff.

My mom usually also keeps a small suitcase with a change of clothes and our solid hygiene stuff like soap, deodorant, etc. in it in case our luggage gets lost for a day.

Just don't take liquids, not even shampoo, and that's especially for the way back. I'm not sure what the airports are like in the U. K. (probably not as paranoid as they are over here!), but on the way back, be prepared to be everything but completely undressed and your suitcase gone through.

Oh, and make sure that you're not too attached to your suitcase. American airports are amazingly tough on them! I swear, sometimes I think that they don't even care about their passengers.

Wait. They don't.

Merry travels!

Bring a nice book, or perhaps a handheld game to play. Hope you enjoy your visit to my country. I enjoyed yours each time I went there. I'm in New Orleans hope you can get here one day.

Congratulations. I hope you enjoy your trip. I have never been to England, but have been to other parts of Europe and Asia. I usually carry a few things to snack on, but if the airports there are like the ones in the US then you will probably have to buy any bottled drinks after you go through security. Aside from that bring some music, or if you have a portable DVD player that works nice to pass the time.

Other than that, unless you like to read, that should be good. At least it worked well on the longest flight I have taken (13 1/2 hours).

Have fun.

books, music, earphones so you can watch the on board movie

I went to the US on holiday just this summer!!! I was soooo excited!!! I went to california- 10 hour flight!!!

if you're flying ba, they have lots of good films. However, sometimes you do get a bit bored, in which case they also provide music, and episodes of tv shows like friends etc.

I got given....2 meals and a snack, and drinks every hour and a half. The meals had some meat, and a choice between two of the 'main dish'. you also get a pudding-like thing, say cheesecake is what i got. Then i got fruit, and a really cool mini water bottle, you can also have wine if you're an adult, and coke etc for anybody. or you can get orange juice, or just water.

I brought.... water, but i had to drink it before i got checked, and then fill it up on the other side. I brought my mp3, a magazine, some sweets and i brought a good book. Sometimes you might feel like sleeping though, as it can be tiring, but you can't really bring anything to help with that.....

They provide a blanket and headphones (although i recommend you bring your own, as theirs aren't very good), and socks and eye-cover.

(of course, this is assuming you travel ba, in which case everything is free, yes, even the peanuts lol)

Sorry for writing you an essay on it! (I can't get enough of talking about my holidays.)

I'm going to America too for the first time ever! :)
