Holiday aboad , why child prices on flights so expensive?

iv been looking for a holiday abroad this year for myself and my partner, my 4 yo son and baby who will be one in julyiv tried several sites and am very shocked to find that when searching for flights , the price for my 4 yo son is the same as an adult price , i think thast is bloody ridiculous he is 4 yo , what happened to child seats? does anyone know why this is , i thought he would of been half price or a bit more but not an adult price
Additional Details
kinda makes sense but trains and buses and boats offer half rice fair to children so planes should too , also what happened to child free places you dont get them anymore? also infants dont take up a a seat on a plane but they still get a small charge

Sounds like a low cost or charter airline. Full service airlines normally charge about 2/3 of the adult fare for a child in a seat. But the airport/GordonBrown tax whacks the fare way up. Example: we're taking our son to Singapore, adult total price around £600. Baby fare is 1/10 of the adult fare, which is about £480+taxes, so it's £48+taxes for the infant. Add the taxes and the total has gone from £48 to £160. That's right, the taxes are more than the fare.

The only real discount the airlines can save is on weight of the person - that's why they don't discount that much. As an airline trying to make a profit, you want to charge as much as possible for that seat, and that means charging adult prices.

Check the scheduled airlines' websites. They are often cheaper than the travel agent ones anyway. You may even find that flying BA costs more per adult but less per child and therefore works out less than Queasyjet or whatever you've found that charges adult prices.

Try sunsave.com and otbeach.com, they tend to have seats a lot cheaper for children and some infant seats are £25, good luck.

a seat on a plane is a seat. Not matter who sits in it. If there is a small bum or a large bum- its still occupied- they cant sell it to anyone else. We are trying to cut people making so many trips abroad to save our planet- the only way to do this atm is to raise prices of flights so people cant go on as many. Therefore, why should the airlines lose out because a child is going? They could sell the seat for £50 to a child but £100 for an adult, why would they even want children on their flight? Why should they give up their £50? Does that make sense kinda?

We're the same my 4 year old pays fulls adult price but on the booking form still says child place and my 1 year old had to pay £29 although it says under 2's fly free it's an absolute con! We're only going cos it was my parents that booked and now my son is excited but I was very angry that they just accepted it.

You're buying a seat. Why would the price for a seat change depending on how old the behind sitting in it was?

A. A seat is a seat. A kid takes up as much space as an adult.

B. It doesn't cost anywhere near as much to run a train as it does to fly an airliner. And trains can add or delete cars. The space on a plane is finite.

like others said ,seat is a seat on a plane, i dont need to get a seat for my one year old but i have no baggage alowance,
so whats the bloody point in taking him?
i found i booked a year in advance, got a weeks selfcatering in spain all in flights transfares and accom for 6 people in may £850.00, i got my free child places for booking so early.
that was with going places. and the holiday is provided by thompson just ring them up and say like i did ,im on a strict budget . rather than lose your custom youll get a holiday at your price and not theres, but dont budge on your budget.stick at it and they will cave in eventually

Kids shouldn't be allowed on planes so the higher the child tickets the better!
