How can I alleviate my fear of flying?

I need to take a plane across the Atlantic, but have a crippling phobia of flying. I've tried rationality, drugs and whiskey. None of these worked in the face of searing terror.

I am terrified of flying and live on an island & I have to take little flimsy planes to get off it. Flight time is usually an hour and within 30min I am a sweating nervous wreck.
First thing I do is make sure that I get a seat near an exit, far away from any propellors and I wear comfortable clothes. I also have always a pillow with me - not for sleeping but to cover my head if anything should happen. I talk to people whether they want to talk to me or not as that takes the attention away from the shaking plane and makes time go quicker.
And I let the flight attendend know of my fear, they can be very helpful!!

Even though I am terrified I keep forcing myself to fly. Sadly it also made me write my will and plan my funeral lol

You could consider hypnotherapy for Phobia desensitization; it works faster and more effectively than other desensitization methods. Find an accreditted and experienced therapist who will explain how it all works and answer any questions you may have, before starting. It will require a number (not many) of sessions. If you are in the UK the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BSCH: www.bsch.org.uk) should be able to refer you to someone in your area. Best wishes

Go and see your GP. I am terrified of flying and each time I go on a plane it only gets worse. I spend the whole flight crying and telling everyone I need to get off. I had to go to the USA earlier this year and I couldn't sleep once the flight had been booked, when I did manage a bit of sleep I dreamt I was on a plane I couldn't get off. I tried all sorts of things to stop this stupid phobia including drinking heavily, but nothing worked. Eventually I went to see my GP and when I told him how I felt he didn't laugh at me. Instead he gave me anti-depressants and tranquillisers. I managed the 10 and a half hour flight (just) in a bit of a sleepy state but once on the ground I felt fine ( apart from the thought of the flight back home). I am determined I am not going to give into this fear but it still scares me witless. Go to your GP and be honest. Best of luck, you'll be fine.

There are courses that can take away your fear. Check in your area if such courses are offered. Such treatments are also available on-line (see e.g. http://www.fearofflying.com/). By actually going on a flight. Don't think about it, just enjoy your time on they flight. The time will go pretty fast, you have meals, naps, read mags, watch a video. whatever. Just don't worry about it. No point in worrying anyway up there, you are in God's sweet hand.

the way of treating fear is to be gradually exposed to it. so try if you can get help to force you to try it. this is the only way. gradual means slowly. you can start by going to high places. maybe on your home roof first then a tall building. exposure and nothing going wrong will give you the assurance and confidence you need.

you have to determine what specifically scares you in flying. maybe you don't like birds. haha. or the plane might crash.

if there'x a tv just watch..that's how i survived a 16hour flight to the philippines and back. OR sleep then you won't even know you are on a plane.

just look around at the other people who are calm that made me feel better...

Take your tablet. Have your drink. Close your eyes, then try to concentrate on the TV or try to sleep.

So if you've tried flying before and you couldn't do it, you should probably stay home. Think of the greenhouse emissions you won't be responsible for.
