How can I deal with my fear of flying? |
I never used to have a fear of flying until I went to Mexico, coming home was the worst turbulence ever! I'm going to Dubai this Summer (flying from Dublin) with Aer Lingus, I'm just so panicky when it comes to turbulance, the slightest jolt and I'm freaking out! I go on holidays every year and it's the same thing each year, I'm going to the bathroom on the plane all the time because I think it is the safest place!!! I need help!! |

I suffer from the same exact problem. I've flown a few times but every time the plane jolts I fear the engines shut off or the wings broke off and we are falling out of the sky. The only thing that keeps me sane is having someone I love there with me to hold my hand. haha! I also need my mp3 player so I can't hear every little normal engine noise and freak. So turn up the volume...shut your eyes and hold a hand. When it starts to shake look around at everyone else. It doesn't seem to phase them does it? It's because they have all flown many times and know it is normal. If it gets really bad and even the flight attendants look worried well...that's when I start freaking...haha! |

It's funny (ironic not haha) that you say that. I travel often and the worst turburlence I have ever experienced was flying "home" from Mexico! Anyway...the best thing I do is that I am lucky and can fall asleep as soon as I board the plane. Pop a Tylenol PM about 20minutes before boarding and than you will be a bit relaxed and than once you board, take another and you will fall asleep for majority of the flight. |

Go to your family doctor. He/she will prescribe you some medicine. Probably some Xanax (for your nerves) to get you through the trip and Phenergan (for your nausea). Also, if you can pick your seat, ask to seat near the wing. I know a pilot and he said that is where turbulence is the least. Have fun on your trip!!! |

Do you think the bathroom reaches the ground last?? LOL Sorry don't mean to laugh, but it's too funny.
I think it's the way your mind works. Statistics mean nothing to you, right? Even though you're way more likely to die from crossing the street than flying around the world... maybe think you're doing something as simple as crossing the street while you're flying, but it's taking a really long time for some reason..
My Uncle is a now retired airline Capt. He assures anyone, from what HE has seen in a plane that it will not come apart from turbulance unless someone flew into a super cumulonimbus or something. What gives pilots the nerve to fly day after day? They want to come home too, right? Surely you don't think they are real risk takers, flying several flights a day often...
You're probably a control freak. Because YOU are not flying the plane, anything could happen, yes? I know one or two people like this and someone suggested one of those fake wheels with a tiny horn on it for kids... bring one of those on the plane and pretend You are actually flying!!!
Also, maybe read up on the most dangerous careers and see where Airline Passenger pilot rates as far as mishaps. Find out how many flights the average pilot flys and then multiply that by how many it would take to crash. Even if it were to crash you are very likely to survive and what a cool story that would be for the grandkids.
Addit.
I like goober padoodle's answer, even though it makes virtually no sense that a wing would fall off. If an engine falls off no problem. Just land. :o) Hehehe |

Three words: Mile High Club.
If you have a good partner, you'll even learn to love turbulence. |

Just think about this fact: It is more dangerous to drive in a car than to be on a airplanes. Airplanes are very safe, and accidents don't happen very often.
Turbulance just makes the airplane bounce up and down, but it will not crash. If you feel fearful, shut the window shade and try to sleep. That way, you won't be thinking about it as much (or eat somthing). |

Dramamine. Liquor. Hypnosis. Meditation. Bathroom? NOT the safest place on a plane. |

you need to talk to your doctor, maybe he can help. Try taking a sleeping pill or wear a blindfold cover over your eyes.
It's like sitting in your living room. Just relax. Flying is safer than riding in a car.
good luck
