How can I get my money back for a non-refundable airline ticket?

I've booked a one-way ticket which is non-refundable and non-transferable, and I don't want to travel any more. Someone has already suggested travel insurance to me but I don't know how to do this. Any ideas?

You have to buy the travel insurance at the time you plan the trip and book your tickets. Too late for that now.

It's a shame that you can't sell it, but I assume that "non-transferable" means you can't sell it either.

Non refundable mean non refunable. The only things you could do would be to use it for future travel on the same airline. Also, you may want to check the fare rules of the ticket. Nowadays, if you don't cancel before you are supposed to travel you won't have any value at all. Travel insurance will probably not work. For one, you typically have to buy it with-in a certain time from when you purchased your ticket. Also, travel insurance won't cover you if you "just don't want to go." Sorry..you are screwed. :)

Unfortunately, you agreed to the no-refund clause when you bought the ticket. Travel insurance won't cover you if YOU change your mind and cancel the trip, either; they only cover situations where it's not your fault. For example, if you want to go on a cruise and need to fly to Florida to board the ship, but miss the cruise because your flight into Florida was late, then your travel insurance would cover the non-refundable cruise ticket.

So you are stuck.

Your only option is to cancel the itinerary and pay the rebooking penalty--- in the US it is $100 usually--- then apply the difference to a future flight. There may be some heavy restrictions here too, depending on what other clauses you agreed to when you bought the ticket, but you must do it before the date of the flight's departure.

As far as i know (i've worked in a travel agent) you cant get it back. You can however, get the tax back - which I imagine is a fair amount as it's getting very expensive these days, often the tax is as much as the fare itself.
So even if you loose the air fare, you have the consolation of gettin the tax back.

If the terms and conditions state the ticket is non refundable as you suggest then the airline will not give you your money back. After all, it is non refundable.

If you have travel insurance then speak to your insurer to see if they will let you claim for the airline ticket. The details will be in your policy document. However, if you want to claim merely because you have changed your mnd about travelling, the insurer is unlikely to pay out.

Non refundable means just that. Insurance won't help if your reason for not flying is just that you don't want to travel any more.

If you were ill and a doctor advised against travelling or if you had had a death in the family, you could have claimed off your insurance policy (assuming you took one out) but change of mind is not an insurable risk so you're out of luck.

Some airlines will give you a refund if you request it within 24 hours of purchasing it. Sometimes big travel agencies with close connections with the airline can do it for you but that only happens with expensive international tickets. If you can claim on the travel insurance (insurance is for emergencies), you can already claim the refund with the airline.

Travel insurance is almost a scam unless you have a real emergency. Make sure you read the contract thoroughly before you purchase it. Otherwise try calling the airline and talking with there customer service and see what they can do for you. Try the nice route, how you like flying with them blah blah blah. If that doesn't' work suggest you'll fly there competitors next time.

Well under UK law there is no such thing as non refundable, companies often make stuff up as their personalised 'company policy', which may not actually be lawful at all.
EG, a 28 day return policy is nonsense! It is only 'a gentlemans agreement', you accept it or not.
Also a non refundable ticket may well be unlawful too, so find out your rights as a consumer.

The product has to be fit for the purpose, however who's fault is it that you can't go???

So therefore, why not sell it privately or get an agreed partial monetary exchange, or a voucher exchange. Or claim through a policy of travel insurance, under the circumstances.

Also I agree with FRANK B, and don'ttellme, be nice and chat to them about your intended future custom!

It is bad business to loose a regular customer due to this unfortunate situation which you have found yourself in, it is your fault and not theirs so be nice, pehaps ask for another flight.

There is an outside chance of a way out of this. If you paid for your ticket by credit card, you may be able to claim the ticket costs back through your credit card company.

I think you have to have a minimum spend of £100, and there's probably other T&C's, but it's a possibility. Granted, it's an outside chance, but it may work.

However, this would only work with a credit card, not a debit card, cash or money transfer.
