Step 1
Before the flight takes off ask your flight attendant to give you a bottle of water and while take-off take frequent small sips of water or juice.

Step 2
If you can't get water or juice start chewing a piece of gum or candy and swallow frequently.

Step 3
The more you swallow the more you open up your Eustachian tube and more you will equalize the air pressure on either side of your ear drum to keep it pain free and safe.

Step 4
If you have nothing to drink, chew or swallow, or try yawning.

time for a change
Suck on a boiled sweet for take off and landing x

i always use airplanes from the chemist. they arent very expensive and you can use them again and again. usually you put them in your ears about an hour - half an hour before landing. i used to have really bad pains, but i dont get it at all when i use earplanes.

good luck!

Chew gum or eat something that requires a lot of chewing, swallow air, yawn, yell (might disturb other passengers).

The idea is that all of these activities encourage your eustachian tubes to open. These tubes connect your middle ear to your mouth and allow you to equalize pressure on the inside and outside of your eardrum (you hear popping noises when they open). Using muscles in your head moves the tubes and makes them more likely to open.

Other things you can do include taking short flights instead of long ones (short flights fly lower, so the pressure changes in the aircraft aren't as large), or flying in newer airliners (which have computerized pressurization systems and greater pressure limits that allow them to minimize pressure effects).

Avoid flying if you have any kind of respiratory condition (cold, flu, allergies), because this can block the eustachian tubes, and if they refuse to open you may end up in a lot of pain.

You can chew gum, crack your jaw, or yawn as you feel the pressure. I also take a decongestant when my sinus problems are kicking up because the combination of pressures is terrible!

Ocean angel
Yeah ear pain happens to me sometimes when the plane takes off and lands so what I do is chew gum or suck something.

Suck on boiled sweets. Once airlines handed these out to everyone - then the accountants moved in and said they cost too much!

If you want other handy travel tips, watch www.healthspanews.com which is being set up to help those travelling after operations, etc. and has lots of tips for abled as well ad disabled passengers.

Chewing gum really helps. Chew it during take off/landing and it eases the pain. Jerky works, too. Something to keep your jaw moving.
