Just tell them beforehand. No matter what religion or anything you are, you can call the airline a few hours before your flight and they will be happy to change their computer system to whatever kind of food you like.
Personally, these "special" food are sometimes gross though. They are usually not better than the regular food passed out to regular people. |

yeah, if you are on int'l flight where food is served and you order (24? 48?) hours in advance. It's not an excuse--how are they going to tell if you are Muslim, Jewish, or need a low-salt meal?
Dunno about "better" as I have never had one, but obviously they are prepared in much smaller batches! |

That only works if the airlines actually serve a meal. Most domestic flights do not serve meals, so if you think vegetarian nothing is better than regular nothing, more power to you.
If you are on a longer flight that serves meals, sure, do whatever you want. But unless you're in first class, chances are about the only thing you'll be able to buy is a sandwich for $5. You can buy something better at the airport and bring it with you. |

I certainly admire your ethics; and not to worry -- it's not necessary to lie.
As the previous respondents have indicated, most airlines no longer serve food in their coach cabin on domestic flights. There are exceptions to this, however; most notably Continental, which DOES serve inflight meals on longer flights. On transcontinental flights, the majority of airlines still serve meals as part of their standard services.
To get a special meal, you simply call the airline and request it. If you ask for a Halal meal, for example, you will not be asked if you are Muslim. Likewise, one is free to request a kosher meal without being Jewish, etc.
In my experience, the "special" meals usually are better than what's usually served . . . it's just a matter of knowing which specific specialty is the best. Normally, I simply call the airline and tell the service rep that I'm seeking a better meal -- I see no need to be "sneaky" about it -- and the response is almost always positive.
I did this recently on a Continental flight, and the agent I spoke to had sampled ALL the special meals they offer. Her recommendation took me by surprise: She suggested the "gluten-free" meal. I took her advice, and the meal was delicious! My fellow travelers looked at me with envy while I had my "special" dining experience.
Happy Travels!

You don't have to lie, many airlines offer special meals for dietary needs like Muslim, vegetarian, diabetic, Kosher meals etc., and you don't have to be Muslim for example to ask for a Muslim meal. As long as you inform the airline before you fly, many airlines will offer menu choices when you buy your ticket online, and the airline will try to accomodate you. From my experience if you think airline food is bad, the special meals are usually even worse, you do get served before everybody else, but don't expect better food, just request the meal of your choice, it's not lying to ask for a special meal. |

You get peanuts. And nothing if they dont have that. At least, if you dont fly first class.
Like the first poster said, Airlines are getting rid of meals.
Some may actually allow you to buy food. I'm not sure what the menu is, however. |

Yes, they put more thought into th special menus. Then again more airlines are getting rid of meals altogether. Consider buying something in the airport and taking it onboard. That is the safest bet. |

Buy first class then you can get what ever you want. |
