How come all flight atendants are always women?

In my 13 years as a Flight Attendant, rarely did we not have at least one male coworker.

Domestic was more female dominated, partly because of the working moms who preferred to not do the longer international trips.

International was about 1/3 guys, only about half of whom were gay.

I've seen some male attendants, but you are right that most are women.

the_hilton
They aren't always, but it is generally seen as a women's profession as are most customer service stuff.

Some jobs are just traditionally for one sex or another - eg nurses, fire fighters, secretaries and engineers. However, there is nothing to stop the opposite sex from being in those fields.

What'd you do fly once, then make an assumption? About a third of flight attendants these days are males.

Because thats sorta a woman controlled enviroment kinda like the nursing field

They aren't all women. I hnave flown many times where therre were male flight attendants/ I remember one fligt where the male attendant had all of us laughing, He kept up a steady stream of chatter and gags during takeoff and landing. I like the part when the pilot had jst feversed the engines on landing and he said in his besr "Lone Ranger" voice 'Whoa there big fellow"

I've flown on 6 different airplanes this summer and on every other plane there was a male flight attendant so what you're saying isn't really accurate.

Dangermanmi6
I think it is from the early days of aviation when they had to have Nursing qualifications and it just sort of stuck. Also on the pratical side women are generally lighter and smaller than men allowing them to move around the cabin easier and it takes less fuel to lug around a 125lb woman than a 225lb man. In the early days of aviation every pound counted, my first flight they weighed every bag going on the plane including your hand baggage.

Once planes got bigger (707) the justification for the gender barrier was broken and there started to be more male flight attendents.
