How come the people who work for the airlines are so rude?

The people at the airlines aren't the nicest people if you don't mine me saying. Even though I'm only a teenager and i don't know everything. But every time i say hello to them or ask how their doing ( every time i fly somewhere) they always seem rude. Another time i was flying alone and i needed help with my suitcase and asked them politely to help me and one of the stewards said " sorry i am not authorized to do that" .

No were are not the nicest folks in the world, but customers make us like that. Not all customers, but many, and when the occasional nice person like yourself rolls around, many of us just do not respond correctly. Customers run us through the ringer with totally outrageous demands and stuff, so those of us who have been doing it for so long turn into robots (especially hub cities). As far as the stewardess helping you with your luggage, some carriers do not want them to help with carry-on luggage. If they get injured picking up a heavy bag the wrong way or something like that... that flight may get cancelled and then the robots get angry!! LOL

tricycle_pilot
Because they have to deal with alot of a$$holes every day.

leeseylou2
Imagine being in their shoes. They deal with thousands of people who are stressed. Not everyone can deal with that many people who get upset at them for something that is not in their control. It's only natural that they might seem short with you.

In reference to the stewards, maybe they actually weren't authorized to help you. You could've asked who was, or asked another traveller to help. Don't assume they were being rude.

Tri's right. Dealing with all that pressure and bad behavior from other people takes it's toll after a while. Even the nicest person would become rough around the edges if that was their job for 40 hours a week year after year.
If everybody else was as polite as you are, they wouldn't be that way.

soulguy85
Probably because they are overworked and have to deal with an irate public which often has expectations that are way out of line with reality.

yishelle
man, that's pretty messed up. you've probably encountered those who are burnt out, cause customer service is very hard to do. it makes you black inside. they need a new career.

boy330
I deal with the public and sometimes you cant be nice to everybody because some ppl can be very rude for no reason. Sometimes they may greet the customers and the customer shows no respect back.
But there are some ppl that work for the airlines that are just grumpy. But those are mainly the ones that have been there too long and they dont like there job but have no skills so they cant go anywhere else

The government has limited them with the homeland insecurity

There are people who does customer service who only make about $7 an hour who deal with irrate, short tempered, rude people. That is what the job is....customer service. I don't think there's anyone at the airlines who make less then $25 an hour, have health insurance, vacations, investments, etc. They are paid well to be people oriented. To be rude to a nice kid is not called for. The airlines are not people oriented towards their employees but neither are alot of companies that don't give their employee anywhere near what these employees make.

I dont know the main reason but maybe their head hurts from flying or somethin like that, i guess?
