How do I calm my nerves when flying? |
I have to travel frequently for my job and it never gets any easier. I'm petrified of airplanes. I'd like to know if there is a way to reduce my nerves (preferably without taking anything). I really don't want to make a scene considering I fly alone.
Thanks! |

My first time on a plane was June 08. I was basically alone. Not to mention my greatest fear is putting my life in the hands of a machine. I sat next to a very nice older lady whose son happened to be a pilot. It was a small plane and the ride was fairly short, nothing compared to the 8 hour flight I had to look forward to after I landed. Anyways I looked out the window and tried to read a book. If it's your first time, the fear is something you just have to experience and get over. Life is too short to be scared. That's what I told myself. If it's not you first time...The three other times I have flown.. I held hands with a friend, chewed gum, watched movies and read. Find something you interested in and get into it. |

I find that sleeping on a plane helps the most. So if it is possible, don't sleep before you get on the plane, and doze the flight away.
If that's not possible, remember that flying is safer that being in a car and on a train. And i bet you don't get scared in a car.

I keep repeating to myself that if I flew once every day, I would end up in ONE accident in more than 30,000 YEARS.
It also helps to know the stats of some new planes- like the Boeing 777 (I think the folks at that company are superstitious), which has been flying for over 10 years without one deadly accident.
Finally, I find that if you can get excited about flying, you won't be afraid of it. |

Don't write off taking something so easily!
Xanax or any of the benzodiazapine's are fantastic at calming these type of fears.
Take 2 or three and it wouldn't matter if you are on a one way trip to hell on a cardboard plane! Not only will you not be petrified, you may even enjoy yourself.
Anti-anxiety agents are made for a reason.
Or you could try some meditation techniques. |
