How do I get over my fear of flying?

I have flown overseas all my life. My dad was in the Air Force, we've lived all over. So as a young girl it didn't bother me then. I didn't notice the fear since after 9/11. Even with heightened security I'm still nervous, anxious and frightened. I've had really bad panic attacks in flight over the slightest feeling of turbulance.

I have a trip (flight) planned to visit a friend in Florida in mid-February. What can I do to calm my nerves? To prevent myself from becoming over anxious and panic? Anything besides drinking alcohol on the flight - lol - as I already do that.

Thanks so much! Have a great day!

Not that this would change anything, but I'm 26 years old. If it's necessary to know.

Also ... I haven't booked the flight yet. And just thinking about me makes me very anxious, shakey and scared.

I used to be able to sit in the window seat, but now it's become the aisle. Due to scary movies of planes crashing I haven't even been able to sit near an exit either. I know they are just movies but I can't do it.

The best answer for that is fly often. I used to be terrified of flying but I sucked it up for the first few times and by my third flight I was barely getting butterflies. A beer at the airport bar gives me a chance to unwind by talking to the bartender and other fliers and helps me to calm down as well.

Hire 3 ex-military friends who are willing to trick you, and sometimes knock you out, in order to get you on that plane.

Just do it.

It's called a tranquilizer. Take one (or two if needed) as you are walking towards your gate. They should be hitting you good and hard as your plane begins to taxi. You'll never know you were in an airplane!

Edit: ask doc for either Klonipin or Xanax. Works like a charm.

Princess
You just got to do it otherwise you will never see the world!

Good luck and you will be fine!

Just think of it this way. Everytime you get nervous, there's a terrorist laughing at you. You let them win when you let fear overtake you.

I'm really scared of flying and I usually get some diazepam from my doctor for flights. It calms me down a lot.

Failing that a few vodkas works wonders to calm my nerves too!!

Good luck on your trip and dont look down the window and keep talking and eating candies or play some games on the seat tv (some airplanes dont have that) But dont worry i am sure u will do a good job

The best way to get over a major fear is...slowly. The phrase "baby steps" comes in handy here. You need to desensitize yourself to the thing that scares you. In this case, flying. There was a tv show on once where someone took people through their fears. Whether it was dogs, planes, spiders, or something else. You could also try being hypnotized. There's gotta be some trick there to get you to stay calm. Or you could get some valium from your doctor. But then you probably shouldn't drink on the flight. :)

Harshi
Well there is not much you can do. What I can tell you is do something creative on the flight to take you mind off of the flight. Read a book, watch a movie if you have a portable dvd player, talk to your neighbor (if he/she is cool), or if nothing works just go to sleep and when you wake up you will have already landed at the airport.

hope that helps

I understand, I share your fears. Other then alcohol I don't know what to tell you, maybe xanax, it would calm you down, but also may make you tired.

aaron_tbrook
Fce fear head on (keep thinking of how free you'll feel after) Also we sometimes confuse fear with excitement

God Bless you

mel
well, you have to give up control when you get onboard. it's all out of your hands. no way would terrorists succeed today like they did in '01. the pilot does not want to crash, you know.

The first time i flew was really scary. TRUST ME! but did you know that its more dangerous to be in a car than in a plane? its true just trust what i say and you will be fine :] good luck and good flying

Jen, calm down. There are other alternatives to flying if you can't get over the fear. There's Amtrack .Also there's ships that can take u to your destinations. They may take longer but at least u will enjoy the trip. Take care.

Steve
But don't you feel self-ish if your getting all worried when your on a plane? If the plane is going to crash then everyone is going down with it. If everyone else is calm and collected you should be too. Is your life any more important than anyone else on that plane? No. So don't worry about it. They are trained pilots, they've flown planes for years and years.

And if you still can't take it even with the guilt, there are other modes of transportation. Take a train. I've taken it several times to Orlando from Boston. It's long but so what. It's kind of relaxing. Check out what Amtrak has to offer.

LEO S
well alcohol helps reading books
if you have fear you really cant be over 100% you have to come
your self down. the way i see is this, if it meant for you to die in the airplane you will not die in the car crash. believe in faith.
