How do you bring pets on planes?

I have been a flight attendant more than 10 years. First, you MUST check on the website or reservations number of your airline. They are all different. Southwest, for ex., transports NO animals ... neither in the hold nor in the cabin ... unless they are verifiably a dog providing assistance to handicapped. They are very strict about this. NONE. Your pet, if it is allowed in the cabin, MUST by LAW stay in its carrier at all times. It cannot come out and sit in your lap, for example, or be tucked inside your jacket, set down in the seat next to you, in the seatback pocket or taken into the lavatory. It must be small enough to fit in a carrier (the kind called Sherpa are very commonly used) and the carrier must fit UNDER the seat that is in front of the one in which you are sitting ... in other words, in your "footroom." The pet must be able to stand up in the carrier. Lots of folks put in a disposable diaper or shredded newspaper for obv. reasons, and/or limit food and water before the flight. Any other bag that you carry on must fit in the overhead bin as your "under the seat in front of you" space will be filled by your pet carrier. The pet carrier cannot sit in your lap, it must be under the seat in front of you. You cannot occupy an exit row w/ a pet carrier and you cannot sit in bulkhead seating because nothing (no bags, pet carriers, etc.) can be in the floor in that area during takeoff/landing. Your vet must provide papers, etc. as required by the airline. Some owners tranquilize, some don't, lots use a product called Rescue Remedy; you can ask about it where you buy your carrier. Also, remember that not all carriers created for you to carry around a pet Paris Hilton-style are legal for airplanes. Make sure that the one you buy is. If your pet is too big, it will have to go in the hard-sided crate and in cargo. Depending on your airline, your pet will count as one of your carry-ons. It will also cost you around $100, again, depending on your airline. There are also other rules about the pet not being smelly, noisy, messy, dangerous, etc., but you can find these rules on airline websites and on the FAA website. Hope this helps. My experience has been that few pet owners seem to know and understand and accept the rules and it is a constant problem to explain and enforce them.

Call your airline for their policy.

It depends on the airline. I know that most airlines, allow their captions to make the decision if animals may fly in the cabin if they are not for medical reason. On Southwest they have a great record when it comes to putting them under the plane. It does depend on the carrier and the time of flight. If the flight is over booked or almost full they may not allow it. Befor you check in call the airline that you are flying with, most wont mind but some do. The required thing that you may carrier pets in is any carrier with a hard bottom so if it goes to the bathroom it does not leak through.

!!!
in carriers .

in crates - even if they are inside the plane with you.

the plast ones with metal bars???

some airlines let you use Sherpa bags for the pet, othre don't

You need to check with your airline about size of dog, and cost.

ten years ago , it was 50 dollars to carry my dog with me across the US.

Some airlines allow small pets, properly contained, as carry-on. The cage must be small enough to fit under the seat. You should check this with the airline you're travelling with.

Otherwise pets need be in a pet cage, and travel in a special compartment in the hold. This compartment is fully airconditioned and set up for livestock. Often an attendant, fully trained to handle animals, will travel with them.

Animals are NOT put in the general cargo hold. There is no risk of animals suffering from extreme heat or cold. That's just an urban myth.

I wouldn't do that if I were you...they put them in the baggage cargo area and it is hot in there..many pets have died...if you insist,,,bring it in a carrier and buy a seat for it...I love my pet so much that I would do that instead of taking the chance of it dying...the airlines might say it won't die but there have been stories where they do...honestly....

first things first. you pet/s should have a legal document of your ownership. these pets can travel if you do have the papers. don't forget the travel cage. =)
