How do you entertain a 3 year old on a 4 hour flight ?

Forget about portable dvd player and snacks/drinks.
Get a seat next to the window. Prepare the child to make this trip and tell him/her how much adventure that is.
Get a colouring book or similar, a favourite small toy (teddy bear or doll), put very little of his/her favourite things in a small kiddies backpack or any other bag the kid should carry itself.
Kids are special on flights and will get toys and things from the crew. Even food and drinks are special as they usually get them served earlier than the rest of the guests.
If you need further help on the plane then ask the cabin crew if they have further toys or if it's possible to have a look into the cockpit. And maybe there's even a kiddie movie on... Some airlines have special kiddie's programmes both on tv and radio programmes.

If you don't have a dvd player, buy one and get some of their favorite movies. Bring coloring books, crayons, barbies or action figures. Make sure to pack a snack for them too, just in case. If you can, sit them near a window, so they can look outside. Hope you have fun!

Well if the 3 year old likes coloring books or if you have a dvd player you could play a movie or play dolls or barbies with her or him

Good idea to make sure the youngster is fairly worn out b4 the flight, their fore hopefully when in air, sleeps will be inevitable. I know that exitement will be on the adjenda, but its worth it for abit of peace. Failing this pre-book your seats and get seats on the ends of isles, or near to the toilets, then atleast he/she can stand up near to you.

Book them on a different flight to you and tell the airline they are travelling alone and the cabin crew will have to entertain them instead. You get the earlier flight and be there to meet them when the child arrives. Easy.

Colouring's always good. They could always draw pictures of the beach or where it is they're going. Plan things to do when you get to your destination. Activity books.

Also, print out a picture of a suit case, and then items that would go in the suit case. Bluetac on the back of each item. Then stick them in the suitcase, and let them try to remember what's in it, or what you've taken out etc. That works for maybe, half an hour.

But you wanna keep them stimulated. No computer games or similar.

Depending on the child: Prepare a carry on bag of items that the child likes to eat, drink, and play with, and also include some new 'dollar store', type toys and picture books, that are new and different. be prepared to walk up and down the isles with the child a bit. Put the child in comfortable clothing and a warm fleece hoodie, in case it is chilly. tell stories about plane flight and how children 'behave' on planes, before you go, to enlist the child's imagination and get them a bit into picturing what they will do on the plane.
