How do you get through airport security with stainless steel implants in your joints?

You will more than likely set off the metal detectors and then the TSA will escort you to the side for extra screening. They will wand you down to determine the cause of the alarm.
It may help if you bring documentation from your physician as well just to alleviate any questions.

Dereky
They will wand you and when the metal detector goes off, they will pat down that area of the body. A doctor's note will also help you get through more easily.

you will get through anyway, but those medical reports and documents will ease all that process.

Most of the time the doctor will give you a note that says you have a metal implant and then they will wand you as mentioned before.

My husband has a titanium rod in his leg from a total hip replacement. When he flies, he just goes to security and tells them he has a metal hip and they take him through the process where he gets wanded. At first it was kind of a pain, but now he knows the routine so it's not so bad.

my mom has some steel in her too. sometimes it doesn't even go off when she goes through. but in the case that it does, if it were me, i would just tell them that i have steel in my joint, they should understand.

Not all metal detectors will go off. Some people actually get prosthetics cards from their doctors; these are sort of like the medic-alert tags that people with special medical conditions wear. Enough people have had joint replacements that most airport wont make a big deal about the situation. Unless you fly though someplace like Washington/Dulles, where they are anal about underwire bras. If the detector goes off, you can just explain the situation and get wanded.

You can carry a card that states that you have metal implants. However, the card really does no good and TSA wants to make their own inspection. I have both hips replaced and I always tell the TSA worker that I have metal hips, then I pass through the detector, it goes off, I step aside and get wanded. It's really not a big deal, takes a couple of extra minutes and you're on your way.
