How do you go about taking a pet on a flight with you?

Does it cost extra? Are the owners expected to know how the pet will react on a flight? Are there people nearby to check on the pet until you land or are they left alone?

All countries are different , it depends if it an international ,or domestic flight .If its a small dog and its domestic they can travel in a suitable bag under the seat , if its a large dog or an international flight they will have to go into the hold .You can hire a crate which has to be big enough for them to be able to turn round your Vet will be able to advise. I traveled from the UK to Spain , both dogs were crated and it cost £900 for the 2 of them .A word of warning if its international you will have to take the dog to the Vet 6 months before you travel to get the necessary vaccinations ie. anti- rabies .
Vets never tranquilize the animals as they need to be able to check that are fit to travel , if the show signs of being lethargic they wont allow them on the flight.
EDIT
Max weight or any Animal in Europe is 32 kilos

You have to contact the airline fist. If your pet is very small then you can take them on the plane with you if there cage can fit underneath the seat in front of you. The dog has to be able to stand up and turn around in this crate. It usually cost an extra $100. But if your dog is bigger than you have to put them in the cargo area and I believe that is just about the same for a ticket.

depends on the pet. if it is too large to fly with you in the cabin then it is going to be put in the cargo hold with all of the other luggage. there are certain guidelines for both of these. for the pet to fly in the cabin with you it has to be under a certain weight and be able to fit under the seat. for it to go in the cargo hold airlines have different rules regarding temp and such - they wont do it if it is too hot or too cold since the hold isnt pressuraized or climate control. i would check with your airline before making any major commitments.

I think it depends on the animal and the size of the animal. When I flew from Arizona to Minnesota, I brought a yellow lab with. He could not go directly on the plane with me. He had to be in a kennel and I did have to pay extra to fly him. It was $50 back then I think. I am not sure if anyone monitors the live cargo or not. I hope so. I just made sure he ate and drank before the flight.

It probaly would, come to think of it!

You put into a cage take it to the airport and make sure he/she has plenty of pasta to eat it is the best food for pets of any species....

I would think that Pets would be considered extra baggage, so therefore they would charge for them. Check out this link. It has a lot of valuable information. http://www.modapets.com/petsonplanes_faq

Does it cost extra? Yes

Are the owners expected to know how the pet will react on a flight? Yes,
Are there people nearby to check on the pet until you land or are they left alone? You're responsible for having an approved airline crate that the pet is secure in. No food or water during the flight. It's handled just like checked luggage.

Emma
You can't take a pet onto the plane with you. You will have to do a lot of paperworks and send it just like your luggage.

you do not say what route you are wanting to travel, yes it cost extra (everything does nowadays) Nor do you say how big your dog is.

There are some routes where small lap dogs can be carried in special bags on your knee on the flights. Other than that you have to hire a box from the freight department for the size of your dog, yu need to sort out with the airline freight department first so that you know that they can take the dog before booking your flight because there is a limit to the size and weight each flight can carry. You also need a pet passport showing that they have all their relevant injections etc. As you should be booking yourself on the same flight you then collect them from the live cargo area on arrival

You should check with the airline- they usually have rules about that posted on their websites. I'm pretty sure pets have to be loaded into the cargo area, unless you have a special note from a doctor saying that you have a disability and that's why you need a pet. Personally I think it's cruel to make a pet go in with the cargo while you fly, but some people do and the even give travel tranquilizers to the animal to make them sleep for the duration of the flight. I would still put my pups in a kennel or with a friend if I had to go away somewhere.
