How do you send a 14 year old through airport security, when they have never flown on their own before?

well if she is 14 i think that she can fly on her own but it is up to you. And an airport official will go with her to mexico and then she will be dropped of to you.

i'm sure there's some way to remedy that. when my brother flew alone when he was still a minor they stuck a sticker that says something like "i'm a minor and i'm traveling alone" and there's always a staff nearby to assist him

This is what I've done. I went up to the airline counter and check in with my daughter. I requested child service with the airline. Usually $100 to $150 depending on the airline. You may want to call the airline ahead and ask for the procedure. Each airline does it differently Then I requested a pass to take her through security since she was a minor. The flight attendant will help her with her visa forms etc. Your daughter should ask the flight attendant if she has any questions about any forms while she is on board.

All airlines have a different age that they allow minors to fly completly alone w/o the UM service. United is 14 and Alaska is 13 last time I checked...... She can either fly by her self with no assistance from the airline and go through customs by herself or you can order the UM Service from the airline. It is normally $75-$200 depending on the Airline. For international flights {especially since she hasn't flown before} I would use the UM service. Our son has only used the UM service once {when he was 12} and hated it but he flys all the time more than me......

It all depends on how mature your daughter is. It was her suggestion so she seems to know what she wants. Congrats to your daughter on her major role in a show! You must prepare her and tell what to expect and explain the procedures and the tightened security before she goes. Write a checklist and instructions for her. The airline attendants will help her. Is there anyway you can delay your flight and wait for her? Maybe you can explain the situation with the airlines and they could help you. She is staying with an adult isn't she? I only ask about you rescheduling your trip if possible, because this is a very big deal for your daughter.
They have made it take longer to get a passport. My sister is going on a cruise in January and she had to get her passport ready even this early. I suppose you could "pre-do" the forms. It's a Christmas show ....so do I assume that her show is around Christmas time? Obviously you already know about passports so you can write it all down. I would ask if there's a problem because she doesn't have a driver's license with a pic. Find out all she needs and prepare it for her. Contact the airport and ask questions about her coming out there and explain her age and ask what she will need. You can probably go online and find out what documents you need. I think you need a birth certificate too. Our DMV here lets us know. Good luck and best wishes to your daughter!

You should call the airline you plan for your daughter to fly with and consult them. As far as getting through security, and onto the plane, that's pretty easy. She gets online and shows her passport just as everyone else does. I'm not 100% sure if she'll need a passport to go to Mexico, since she's just 14, so you may want to check out the Department of State's website (here's a good link: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html ) and find out from them what you need to do. tough one. im not sure about everything but i know since shes a minor you need to contact the air port and have them get a stewardess to sit with her on the plane because minor must be acompanied by an adult to fly. call the air port and they should give you all the details
