How does an airline know which bag to remove?

In the case of a passenger who is not able to board a flight and their luggage is in the hold, how does the airline manage to get their suitcase from the hold so quickly? Surely there are hundreds of bags already loaded in the hold, how do they locate that person's bag?

Your bags will not be sent out to the tarmac for loading into the plane until you've gone through the boarding process at the door to the Jetway and is heading into the plane yourself.

Most of the times, those who are denied boarding or did not make the flight do so before they go through the boarding check and therefore, their luggage is still not yet on the plane. The airline can locate a bag by scanning the luggage tag with a bar code scanner and also by just reading it.

In the case that a person has already boarded and his bags are in the cargo hold, his seat assignment tells the luggage handler which section of the cargo hold to look for his bags in case he's unable to go through with the flight (he gets sick, takes an offer to fly on a later flight for a reward, or has emergencies...). Again, they can use an infra red scanner to verify his luggage tags in the hold. Actually, sometimes this process takes longer than you think but cases of people getting off after they've boarded are infrequent.

They are not usually stored on the plane until it's about 10 minutes away from taking off... As for finding it... It's just a matter of looking at the tags...

they scan the bags and information is given to them about that bag. They don't always get it right though lol!

In my experience, the bag is not removed "quickly" - it can take over an hour. It's a matter of chance I suppose. If the bag is among the last to be loaded, it will found more quickly.

Well, you know how sometimes you seem to sit on your plane at teh gate for a long time with no particular reason for the delay?

9 times out 10 that is something to do with luggage. Ussualy they will have to dig around and find bags that are left over from passengers who take other flights or miss that one...

I'm guess they describe the color and size, and some who does this everyday has a trained eye for his JOB!

Most of the time they don't. The baggage system is flawed

?
If someone goes on a flight standby, their bags are tagged with bright tags so if they do not make the flight, those bags can be found quickly and removed. Most of the time, if a passenger does not board a flight, the bag still goes on... there would have to be time to check every bag and sometimes there is not..
