Jetliners fly subsonic.
Slower than the speed of sound, 761.2 mph(1225kmh)
Mach 1 is the speed of sound, that's why some answers mention Mach.
The main reason is that planes make a sonic boom when they hit Mach 1 and we can't have 1000's of plane making sonic booms all day long around the world.

The 747 is the fastest commercial airliner currently in service. Its maximum speed is Mach 0.92, which is about 977 km/h (608 mph). A typical cruise speed in commercial service is around 500 knots (925 km/h or 575 mph).

http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/boeing_747, the boeing 747 fly's at a speed of mach 0.8 (567 mph or 913 km/h). Look up the web site above for more information on the boeing 747?

The above answers are good, but with a strong tailwind a 747 can hit speeds of around 700mph.

Cruise speed is set by Air Traffic Controllers to ensure a safe separation between flights. Usually this is Mach 0.82 at high altitude. Most 747s cruise between 31000 and 37000 feet. This is about 540 MPH in still air. In theory a 747 can reach just over 600 MPH but the higher speed is bad for fuel consumption and therefore rarely used.I
These speed are true for other commercial long range aircraft of Boeing 737 size or larger. The DC10/MD11 is the fastest of the bench bur rarely uses it's extra speed.
Smaller aircraft are slower expect about 400 MPH max for the Embraer 145 family and even less for propeller driven aircraft.
