How long does a flight to america take and is it possible to go to and be back in england within 5 or 6 days.?

i am planning on booking a short holiday to miami in a few weeks, only thing is! i work as a cleaner on a holiday camp and i work on a saturday., so if i go on holiday and leave for miami on the sunday and make plans to be in england by friday, is all this possible. i am aware that i could get some time work and plan a longer stay, but i've only just started my job.

oops ok!
new york takes around 6 -7 hrs

It's possible. It's about 9 hours from London to Miami and about 8.5 hours back. It'lll be a day flight going out on the Sunday but a night flight coming back flying Friday landing Saturday.

Figure on a transatlantic flight taking 8-10 hours. The time scale you mention is perfectly possible, but I wonder if its worth it? The last time I went to the states, I stayed for two and half weeks, and found it took me a week just to get used to being there and to properly enjoy myself. Jet lag tends to
make you feel a bit...weird for a few days after you land.

On the other hand you might be so excited you would be buzzing all the time you are there and not worry about anything like adjusting to the time difference, climate, etc.

Maybe consider somewhere closer to home for a short break? For the money a flight to America would cost you (its peak season now, so even more expensive) you could have a really nice holiday in France, Spain or Italy.

When you check prices of flights at http://www.expedia.co.uk or http://www.ebookers.com
they tell you the exact duration of the flights.

If you can afford it, try to book a direct flight, obviously MUCH faster.

so, yes, you can go and come back within 6 days.

Miami is about 8 hours ish. I've recently been to two trips to the staes once to LA (10.5 hours) and once to Las Vegas(9.5 hours) . Both were for 5 nights. I found the short time there ok and didn't suffer any jetlag. Take a morning flight and you should arrive there early afternoon. No matter how tired you are don't sleep when you get there. Apart from wasting a few precious hours of your hol, you will completely mess up your sleeping pattern!

BTW we got to do everything we wanted to do both times. Staying for just a few days means that you have to plan your trip and sightseeing more carefully to fit it all in, but it can easily be done. We got night flights back which was great and I was returning to two excited kids and a job next day. If you really want to do it, it can definitely be done!!!!

teemacsee
Plan for about 8 hours flying time, could be less and of course you have to add on the extra booking in and security check before you leave so you can add on anything from 2 to 3 hours. Yes you can get there and be back in 5 or 6 days.

It depends on where in America you are flying to. Usually it's about a 7hour flight each way (to and from England).

Travel time will take only hours most probably around 6-12 hrs....it really depends on the stuff you want to do in Miami....check those activities first (phone the provider) and ask what is the recomended amount of time to do that particular activity (for example you want to see a museum, how long would it take to go around).
Also USA time is late compared to England's (like New York is 5 hrs later than UK- check the time difference between England & Miami).
And you can have a travel agency book/organize your holiday.
You don't need a lot of days for a holiday...all you have to do is relax & enjoy!

flights to mainland US take no more than 8 hours.. mebbe a bit more to LA, but you arent going there....flights to Miami should be less.. say around 4..6 hours, but a check of a flight website should tell you that.

..thats excluding any time the airline/airport demands you spend before flying .. say 2 hours + time to get out of the airport at the other end.. say 1 hour plus of course your transit time to the airport, and from the other airport... so Id 'budget on a day each way

I think your problem may be trying to get a cheap flight for the days/dates you want, sometimes the cheap flights are only available for 1 week stays, or stays covering a weekend.

best thing to do is to do a search for flights at your nearest major airport (could be Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester or further North). Id reccomend that you allow a day after your return to the UK before going into work.. to allow you to re-acclimatise to UK time. Ive never had Jet lag but it can be a problem for some people.

One tip a frequent flyer told me that seems to work is to treat the flight as if it was the destination time zone. IE set your watch to the timezone of where you are going. If its night time there try to get to sleep, if its daytime try to stay awake.

it may be worthwhile talking to a travel agent to make sure you get all your documentation organised (passports, visas [if required]) and so on.

enjoy your trip

flight approx 7-8 hours no problem going for a week have done so its ok.... bit knackered when you get back after a couple of days....... hey but who cares you have had a fab hol

Sue C
Yes, you can easily (tho maybe not cheaply) make the trip you've planned. Once flew to Houston on a Friday for a party for a Very Good Friend and flew back the next day. Had a great time even if it did take a while to pay it off.

I think the flight to Miami is quite long - 8 or more hours - no doubt others can tell you exactly.

Have a great trip - don't hesitate to go!

dave s
Yes it is possible. You can even fly to Australia within 24 h.

Veronica Alicia
My flights to The States have all been to California, so I can't answer the first part of your question, but if you think about it, business men do trans-Atlantic crossings just for business meetings, so six days would give you a taster of Miami. Think of the flight as being part of the holiday experience.
You will probably be pretty tired when you get back. so I hope your job at the holiday camp isn't too arduous.

Yes it is very possible. There are numerous scheduled flights every day of the week between the US and UK. You should be able to find a combination of flights that suits you. Try a bit of window shopping on http://www.expedia.co.uk/default.aspx inputting different combinations of dates and see what you get. Then you can try shopping around to get the price down.

Cherrypicker
If you try and do it over such a short time span, you will have awful jet lag because of the huge time differences between the UK and the US. I went to San Francisco in 2003 and it was an 11 hour flight - Manchester, via Chigago and finally SF. By the time we went to bed, on the first night, we had been on the go for about 22 hours and it was even worse on the return journey. But we did have a fab time, on a 7 day trip.

enja
yes...flying time is about 9hrs..try british airways or american airlines they have direct flights..thanks!

A flight to this side of the Pond takes 6 1/2 hours or so, maybe a little more to Miami from England. It should be possible to do a return visit in 5-6 days. I suggest you visit www.travelocity.com or the website of British Airways or Virgin Atlantic or similar company. You'd be flying in peak season, so seats may not be too plentiful. Start planning now! (And enjoy your holiday---Miami is quite a place!).

I would think so
