This varies by airline and point of departure. However, in most cases you can essentially carry two bags. Officially the policy is one carry-on (the equivalent of the rolling bag the crew carry) and one "personal item" which should be smaller than the main carry-on. As long as you don't have a purse or laptop, however, this can essentially be another bag. Most airlines will also allow various accessories such as reading material and umbrellas.

Most airlines allow one bag plus one carry-on. Note that food you're going to eat on the plane doesn't count as an extra bag.
