There is a secret to the prices of airfare.
When a airfare goes for sale the first 20 seats ton a plane are the lowest price. Then the next 60 get the next pice, then the next 60 until the last seat that get the highest fare.
My recommendation as a travel agent it to buy your tickets at least with 2 months in advance, but I prefer to do mine especially if they are for high season with at least 6 months in advance.
Good luck

31 days or more. However, book early or you'll be left with flying at odd hours and having to make additional stops. If you want to leave on a Saturday, non-stop, then you want to book at least 60 days in advance. To be safe, book once the flight become available if you can. For example, Southwest will offer flights through a certain date. If you are looking to fly during the Holidays, then wait until that date is available and jump on it.

I have found that usually looking with in the month of travel I find good deals. Keep in mind to have flexible dates of travel. Unless of course you're planning to travel on a holiday weekend, I would book at least 2 months in advance to secure a seat on the airplane.

Tired Old Man
you should be able to do good at 1-2 months ahead. I did that when we went to Hawaii in May. went to AAA in march& got a great deal.

The sooner the better. But I'll say 1 year is a bit too much. Between 3 and 9 minds. Be careful cheap tickets are difficult if not impossible to change and usually there is no refund or steep penalties read the fine print carefully and make up your mind.

it really depends on which days you actually fly, more than advance purchase. but advance purchase help tremendously too. try clicking boxes around the day you want to fly. you'll see a difference in prices.

the best deals are last minute. because airlines want to sell them leftover tickets. except they have the right to over sell a flight and then you could be stuck waiting for a seat or the next flight and the flying standby!

Amanda
The best time is approximately 1 month prior to departure. Airlines will attempt to sell the tickets themselves up until this point and charge full price. At about the 1 month period they become more interested in filling the seat and are willing to offer better deals through websites such as pricline, travelocity, ect. Don't wait until last minute though because within 7 days of departure the prices go back up since most business trips are done on relatively short notice. The airlines assume anyone traveling for pleasure will purchase in advance and that business passengers will pay the higher rates anyway. The more flexible you can be in your travel dates the better price you will get.
