How to feel comfortable on a plane?

I used to question why I could fly to London and internationally comfortably, but when it came to local 2-3 hr flights I get anxious. I soon discovered because I was intoxicated on the longer flights. Is there something that I could take on a domestic flight that would only last the 2-3 hours on the plane to keep me in a relaxed state (with no after effects)?

Here are some sanity savers. Pick only a few, so you don't crowd yourself in such a small area.

Magazines or a paperback or puzzle book
Portable DVD player or video game, even yahtzee or poker digital game
iPod with your fav music or try something new that is relaxing
Headphones for any media
Neck pillow to sleep it off...make sure you are a little sleepy when you board and take the time to rest.
Fleece shirt or fuzzy baby sized blanket (in a grownup color) in case you get chilly
Comfortable shoes, maybe even switch to slipper socks (which are not bulky in your carryon)
Basic medicines for pain, stomach, airsickness in case you need.
Nicotine therapy gum or lozenges if you are a smoker
A portable comfort food like M and M's
One of those stress balls, I like the ones made of spandex with beans inside.

i suggest you do not take drugs and maybe read or listen to music, have some snacks and bring a pillow alonmg to keep you comfortable. the flight is not that long and you shoudn't cause your body harm when there are other methods. You could also hire a tv from the plane to keep you busy or bring a portable dvd player and watch a movie.

There are small, acupuncture-ish bands that you can wear. They don't hurt or anything, they just have little knobs on them that push your wrists in a place that supposedly relaxes you on flights and things...

I'm sure you can find them online- I've seen them everywhere.

They work for some people more than others. They only make a slight difference for me (although I'm usually very relaxed on flights), but they make a world of difference for my mother and younger brother.

You can ask your doctor for medicine for flights. My friend was prescribed something to calm her down--even on short flights.

But I think pre-drinking--and drinking during the flight *not excessively* but enough to make you tired is good. Make sure you are not obnoxious when you drink and make sure it's not too much. A couple of glasses of wine should do it---just enough to sleep or calm down for an hour or two but not too much so that you aren't coherent to pick out your baggage when you get to the claim.

just fall asleep. it really does help because you lose track of time and everything flies by. but bring a good pair of headphones so you can block out most of the noise around.

I travel often for business and they are usually less than 3 hours. I look out the window and make up different fantasies about stuff that "could" happen on the plane. Some of them are funny and I laugh to myself, but some are scary and sad as well. This usually passes time so quickly that I am shocked when the pilot announces we are close to our designation.

As a pilot, I want you to know that you are in good hands. There is nothing to worry about.
There is a comprehensive network of radars, air traffic controllers, maintenance personnel , and FAA officials that are dedicated to you having a safe flight.

I try to either talk to someone and ask them questions about where they are going or coming from. It keeps my mind off of where I am. If you make friends, it helps. You can try to read. I am a people watcher and tend to watch others in front of me and make up stories in my head of what their lives may be like. How do they act? Do they act frightened? If so, maybe I can calm them down even though I am frightened. If not, why are they not frightened?

I also have faith that what ever happens, happens for a reason. When it is my time to go, it will happen no matter what. If I spend my time worried the whole entire time, I might miss something. You may not have any control on how the plane is being handled, but you have experts that do have full control and have been fully trained. You have to have faith that they will get you there safely. Look at it this way.....You have been on how many flights and how many have had wrecks? Look at how many times you could have had good times just fully relaxing. You could have had many hours of just relaxation time. I can try to take a nap if I don't feel like talking to someone. Get to know someone next to you.

You have nothing to fear but fear itself. If you face it, it isn't always so scary as it first appears. What happens if you just relaxed and let the pilot and stewardess do their jobs and worry for you? Why don't you ask God to take your worries while you are on the plane? It helps tremendously, if you really let him handle it.

Hugs to you. You can let go and just relax. Observe the people around you. If they can do it, you can too.

I'd go see your medical doctor and tell him/her that you need something to help you relax when you fly.

I usually read or sleep. I like looking out the window and trying to decide what it is I'm seeing so far below. I haven't taken anything to relax me, the reading does that for me.
