1. Be flexible. Adjust your travel to fit the cheapest days, months, or seasons. See if next-closest airports are a lot cheaper for your trip. http://matrix.itasoftware.com/cvg/dispatch/prego/calendar
2. Shop well. No single source is always cheapest. http://www.bookingbuddy.com
3. Sign up for sale alerts to your email. Know what a good price is, and when you get an alert at or near that level, you'll be ready to book knowing that you've done the best you can on price. http://www.farecompare.com
4. See if low-cost airlines fly the route(s) you need. These airlines usually do not show up in other booking sites, so you have to check them individually. http://www.iflyswa.com and http://www.allegiantair.com and http://www.ryanair.com for example (I don't know where you're flying from, thus the variety of airlines I mentioned).

There is no secret, magic website with the "cheapest" airfares. You have to do the research, and be as flexible as possible regarding travel dates.

Check the travel sites (airgorilla, expedia, travelocity, etc.) and also check the airline websites. I have usually (not always, but usually) found the best fares on the airline websites.

Check with a real travel agent to ask about promotional fares and special deals.

If you also need a hotel or rental car, check the cost of combining the purchases in a package. For example, I found a deal with airfare + hotel in Hawaii for a week that was only $100 more than just the airfare.

When traveling to far destinations check the prices when you split the ticket. For example, searching "Chicago to Nairobi" (all on one ticket) may cost much more than searching "Chicago to London" and then "London to Nairobi". If that turns out to be the case, talk to a real travel agent about getting the better fare all on one ticket.

Good luck!

kayak.com. If you're only going to use one site, then use this one. it is certainly the easiest.

if you have time, also seach one way at a time, instead of round trip. sometimes you can grab a cheap flight (for just one direction) and then wait for a cheap flight for the other direction.

people sell coupons on eBay or you can buy an Entertainment book for coupon codes. you may be able to save some on expensive flights or traveling with a lot of people.
