How to get over nerves when flying?

I'm flying to Dubai, UAE soon. I've been on small flights where the nervousness wasn't that bad due to the short travel time, but this is my first intercontinental flight. I'm really nervous about it. I keep reading the statistics that say commercial airlines are relatively safe and only a small percentage ever have problems, but I find myself thinking "yeah, I'm sure that's what those passengers thought, too.'

I hope I don't go mad. It's a 14 hr flight.

Any advice?

Some people (my dad) go to the doctor....tell them whats wrong they usually prescribe medicine to calm your nerves or to help you fall asleep.

Dude, I'm sorry for you, I have the same problem.

My Answer: Do NOT Fly!

Dubai is OK, not hostile, but you'd have to make me pass out to get on a 1 hour flight anywhere.

Too many close calls for me, but if you haven't had those, just ask you doc for some Valium, sit back, relax, and sleep.

Best wishes.

yeah try to make yourself as comfortable as possible take things to occupy yourself... and alcohol is always a winner but be sure to pace yourself so that:

A.you are allowed on the plane

B.you don't wake up halfway through the flight with a hangover

I've been on longer flights. Go to the bathroom as latest as you can before going onto the plane. Bring something comfy so you can rest and fall asleep with. Bring food that fills you up. And bring anything else that comforts you and you're allowed to take onboard.

well ive heard you can go to your doctor and then tell him about it and he can give you some medicine to calm your nerves

Do not watch any movies with flying, or tv programmes with plane crashes... at least a few weeks if not months before your flight... how about never? That's better.

Do not drink on your flight. Take reading material, watch the inflight movies, do whatever you have to to distract yourself from where you are. Talk to someone during take off and landing. Make sure you get up occassionally to walk around too.

If you like crossword puzzles, get the hardest ones you can find. You'll be concentrating so much on the puzzle that you won't notice anything. That's what I do.

I used to not be afraid of flying but as I got older I got a little bit more scared... mostly because I've seen a lot of plane crashes on tv and in movies. The truth is a lot CAN happen.. but nothing has ever happened and I've been on at least one flight (sometimes up to 10) every year I've been alive, since I was 2 weeks old... and I'm in my 30s.

Bon voyage!

Well think about this: 1 in 1 billion planes ever crash. ever.
plus the ones that have crashed they have made all the corrections on them.

if its bad weather dont go.

well bring your ipod and just think its only an airplane.
i mean tons of people use them everyday and dont die.

millions and billions of people.
