I am flying to India in a few weeks but have never been on a long haul flight before. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get through 10 hours of sitting in a seat without having a breakdown from the boredom?
I go on about 3 long haul holidays a year (well I have this year) + I still dread them. I am going to Mexico in 5 weeks time and have a plan on how to get through the 10 hr flight.
Heres some tips I have -
- Watch some films on the plane. Also listen to music. The TV on the headrests will have some music + films on them but you're better off taking an MP3 player/IPOD with you so you have some music you like. Just incase. (also comes in use whilst you're on holiday sunbathing etc).
- Take a couple of books (for there and back) + perhaps a couple of magazines.
- Sleep for asmuch as possible. When trying to sleep remember to tell the hostesses.. they are trained to wake you up so will do if you don't ask them not to.
- Put all watches/phones (anything with the time on) in you're bag. This is so that you're not checking the time every 2 minutes lol.
- Take some chewing gum to stop you're ears popping on the flight!
- Have a camera handy. It can be cool taking pictures on the plane. The views can be amazing.
- Take a game such as a PSP or nintendo DS.. Can be good + keep you occupied for hours. Especially laptops if you're taking one. Take spare batteries too and different games.
- Perhaps take some sweets or something. Aeroplane food is fowl.
Eat before you get on the plane too.. might make you feel abit better when you start getting bored and agitated atleast you won't be moaning about being hungry too.
- Drink lots of water.
- Perhaps take clothes in you're hand luggage to change into on the flight + then again before you get off the flight. Just so that you feel more comfortable and may be able to sleep better. You should check to see if you get a pillow, blanket + eye mask in advance.. you'll need these to be able to sleep.
Thats all I can think of. I hope you get through you're flight better than you imagined. It'll be better than you expect.

There's usually a film to watch, although it may not interest you.
I just usually go to sleep. :)

The strange thing is that 10 hours sounds long but in reality the trip isn't so bad. The first hour you will have a drink and a meal. Then a movie or two, Doze off for a couple of hours and then you're almost there.
If you're lucky you will have some interesting neighbors
A good book, mp3 player and some magasines take care of the rest.

Watch a few films, listen to music, read a book, sleep?

Watch the films, (probably two and recent ones). Take a book, listen to your mp3. believe me the time will go very quickly. When i do long haul, my journey's are 12 hours plus. If that fails sleep.

I went to Mexico and it is an 11 hour flight!! I took the Observer newspaper and it kept me entertained for many hours. Also, you get at least 2 meals on a long haul flight and that helps pass a bit of time. Enjoy...

Watch the inflight movie and then think "How many times have I seen this before..."
Otherwise ask for a pillow and sleep throgh the whole flight...
