How to overcome a fear of flying?

I am deathly scared of flying. When I find out I have to fly somewhere, even motnhs before, I start to panic. As the flight gets closer I start to freak out and the day of, I am a total mess. My heart races, I shake, and throughout the entire flight I am very tense. The take-off and landing are the worst.

The problem is I'm flying down to Florida in July and I don't want to go through all the drama on the day of the flight. I want to stay calm and have a good time on my vacation, not worrying about when I have to fly back home.

Any tips on how to overcome my fear?

They say the best way to get over a fear is to face it head on. Having lived with a near-paralyzing fear of spiders my entire life, I used to think that was a load of crap! Turns out there’s actually something to it. I started by forcing myself not to close my eyes or look away whenever I saw a spider on tv. I’m still at that stage, lol, but I can honestly say I can watch a spider on tv now without feeling like my skin is going to crawl right off my body and, for me, that’s HUGE.

It starts with accepting that there really isn’t anything to be afraid of. You have a FAR greater likelihood of being killed in a car accident, but I’m sure you don’t fear riding in a car? I know, easier said than done, but this really is all about changing your mindset. You CAN do it.

I’m not telling you to dive in headfirst. You can try to make it easier by requesting a seat away from a window, and TELL your flight attendant that flying makes you anxious. They are trained to deal with nervous flyers and will try to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Some people say that a simple, heartfelt “how are you doing?” from a crew member once in a while can help them feel at ease. Bring some books or magazines to help keep your mind occupied. Also, you could always ask your doctor to prescribe a mild sedative for the flight. Just make sure someone will be picking you up at your destination so that you won’t have to drive.

If you think your fear is bad enough, you could even try hypnotherapy. It works wonders for some people. I knew a girl in college who had a fear of bees that was so bad she would literally cry and rock herself after an encounter with one. After she saw a hypnotherapist, her fear was reduced dramatically.

In fact whatever fears we have, they are there because of some incident we had in the past and so we are afraid that it might happen again, even if we cannot consciously remember that incident, it is stored in our subconsciosness or in so called 'experience of the soul'. This is the theory of Sigmund Freud, but it has been almost proved by a modern psychiatrist DR Brian Weiss, who by the way helped thousands of people with similar fears to yours practising his method in Florida(!) (Miami).

That incident might not even be based on your present life past, but in past life. You might not believe in reincarnation, but I'm not here to convince you, but give you information...

If you remember this experience consciously (best achieved under deep relaxation=hypnosis), the fear will disappear totally! No medications will be needed, anyways they only scratch the surface, but don't heal.

I highly recommend that you ask for help in Weiss institute in Florida and maybe try a past life regression session with a therapist. You could find an enormous bunch of information about Dr Brian Weiss and his research on the web. He also wrote some very informative and interesting books based on true cases! I've read some of them myself..

But he really healed people with claustrophobias (e.g. one saw he or she had been buried alive)... healed obese people (one found she had starved to death in a Nazy concentration camp) .... ... ...with all kind of fears and problems.... And it really worked and it's safe. Remembering your own memory is safe. :)

If you have any questions, just contact me! It's only that I'm going on a holiday for two weeks from tomorrow...

But if you really want to get rid of that fear, the only natural way for it I see as this.

Best of luck to you!

See if you can get a muscle relaxer from your dr. prior to the flight. Read statistics. You are far more likely to be injured in a car accident on your way to the airport than you would as a passenger on a plane.

before it lefts off take a deep breath dont freak out

Don't GO! JUST KIDDING!. Well it would be nice to have drink before hand-:).
Just relax -adam had the same problem and if you just take deep breaths and keep thinking "it will be fine" then you'll be fine!

ok maybe u could try riding roller coasters more. also when taking off or landing cover your ears and close your eyes. chew gum also. they all help keep the air pressure normal.

Take the train. It will take you a bit longer but you can go first class relatively cheap and get a sleeper car. You can also go to the doctor and take a pill to calm you down.
