How will i survive this plane ride? |
next summer, i'm going to germany with a foreign exchange group, and the flight is about 9 hours. I really hate airplanes. i know they are safer than cars, but just the thought of being trapped thousands of feet of the ground for that long gives me a panic attack. that combines my fear of heights and clausterphobia. i'm just afraid im gonna get on the plane and feel like i want my mommy. im too old to be thinking that!! please give me some ideas for how to relax and pass time on the plane. Additional Details please answer in English not IM words |

just relax and bring something to distract you.
also try and sleep for as long as you can.
bring an ipod, cds, magazines and other distracting things.
dont worry i have an intense fear of flying too, i just try my best to be calm. |

first, check with your doctor: you may be able to get the appropriate relaxing drugs rather than to get ideas from strangers like us.
to pass time, listen to music, get a good book... whatever you feel like.
the best is to manage to sleep through so some sleeping pills (again, check with doctor) might help.
I find airplane fun... but I can understand your apprehension!!
good luck |

There are several ways to pass the time so you don't think of the plane itself, you could sleep, maybe bring something to read, or for flights that long they usually have movies to watch, almost all planes has different music stations that you can tune into, you could play a game with your friends, cards, word games, trivia. The possibilities are endless, but the point is basically to distract yourself, maybe bring a puzzle that makes you think really hard. |

Trust me. You will be fine. You have a higher chance of dying at the computer desk you typed this question at than on the airplane you'll be on flying to wherever it is you are going.
Take some dramamine, get your iPod out, take a nap, and you'll be there before you know it. |

you didn't say how old you are - but speak with your family practice doctor. he can offer you sedatives if you are old enough. some include xanax, ativan or vallium. they are controlled substances of basically anti anxiety medication and will make you feel like of drunk without any side effects (other than being kind of loopy and sleepy) it'll wear off and should only be used as advised - they are controlled substances and addictives but many people who have flight anxiety take them before flying - its really no big deal and if you express the fear to your doctor there is no reason not to give you the appropriate dosage if you are at the right age.
you could also take an antihistamine in hopes it'll knock you out |

Two words: Ear Plugs
Go to Walgreens/Rite Aid and buy a few different kinds and try them out to see which one is more comfortable. I fly at least 4 times a month and they are my number one travel accessory.
Bring multiple things you enjoy to do, like a journal to write in, a book by an author you know will engage you, or your favorite music. Transatlantic flights tend to have little TV's, you'd be surprised how fast the flight goes watching movies, shows or doing trivia on those.
Sit in the isle seat, you won't feel as boxed in and you won't be able to see out the windows.
Have a fun trip.
