How will we all get (fly) to countries when all the oil is used up in the next 40 years or so? |

First, oil is not going to dry up in the next 40 years. Second, if you don't think the energy companies already have an alternative fuel source waiting in the wings your highly gulible. Also, there are 12 ethanol plants coming on line in Indiana alone this year to produce fuel from corn. And all 3 major US car manufacturers already have engines developed to run on ethanol. So, unless you like sailing, you will fly just as you do now. |

hopefully in 40 years we won't need oil. |

Solar powered zeppelins, either that or we will all have asphyxiated from too much CO2 in the atmosphere. |

If you do some checking around on the web, you will find reports that old "dry" wells, are found to have re-filled themselves. (Search under abiotic oil.) Let's play a little game of "what if." What if we are dating the earth based on the fossil records, but have actually lost much of the fossil record, and the earth is actually even older? We always wonder how many dinosaurs could there have been to end up under the right conditions to turn into oil. What if everything from the earth's core to the surface is just recycling? How do you think we discover ancient cities buried 20-30 feet below the surface? Where does all of that extra dirt come from? As each layer is added on to the outer surface, the lower layers are getting closer to the core. As they reach the core, the extreme temperatures create different products, such as oil, magma, etc. Those products have to go somewhere, and have been found re-filling formerly empty wells. I think the whole "we are going to run out paranoia" is perpetuated by the oil companies to drive prices. Although, as a planet, we are using an alarming amount of this oil, I believe it will always replenish itself, even if only at a slow rate.
So, go ahead and book that flight to England for the summer of 2046..... |

We'll all be using hydrogen-powered vehicles by then, so... we'll fly. |

A new invention will be invented in 40 years. Airplanes aren't doing well financially.....A genious will figure something out, I hope. It is a global society and we need world travel. |

Unless an alternative source of fuel is derived, one that is abundant enough to support a large civilization such as ours, then we may end up reverting to more ancient modes of travel. Hence, sailing vessels may become the norm again. Flying may be possible, with dirigibles, but only if a fuel source exists to power the props that push it forward.
However, if no alternative fuel source is found, there are bigger problems to worry about other than travel. Civilization will most likely collapse and a great anarchy will ensue as large numbers of people die off due to starvation. Perhaps civiliations will rise from the chaos, but not to the levels that we have today. |

The only solution to the world's long term energy requirements is to develop an efficiant affordable method of converting water into it's constituent elements; Hydrogen and Oxygen. There has been work done to this end but the Oil company giants are keeping it down until they have sold all their oil. |

I am sure before then there will be alternative form of propulsion.
Rather than existing jet engines.
Also the jet engine is fairly tolerant of the type of fuel used.
So could be adjusted / designed to run on synthetically produced alternative fuels. |

Actually oil is highly unlikely to "run out" in the next 40 years. Instead
what you can expect to see is oil becoming more and more scarce.
As it does so it's price will continue to rise. Today oil is just under
$70 per barrel. Just a few years ago it was around $20 dollars a
barrel. Oil and fuel prices are likely to continue to rise in the long
term, with any factors such as instability in the middle east cutting
supplies and raising prices even further.
So the answer to your question "How will we all get to fly in the
next 40 years or so?" is: more expensively and less often!
In addition, if governments get serious trying to tackle global
climate change we can expect to see airport taxes rise massively
in order to dissuade people from flying - making a flight even
more expensive! The era of cheap flights is almost over i'm
afraid! |
