He would not get in trouble for buying you the ticket, but I dont think they will allow you to fly without parental permission. He doesn't get in trouble for kidnapping, he isn't taking you anywhere, you are going there, you get in trouble for running away. If you get caught you might be sent to a juvenile center.

You are a minor and can NOT fly without written notarized permission from both parents.
Then one will have to see you off and there will have to be an adult to pick you up at your destination.
If you are from the u.s you will not be able to board you flight without that permission and a valid passport.
So no it is not kidnapping to that point.
Keep in mind you ARE a minor and he an adult--best to tuff it out for 8 months

Your actual question, about your friend's legal situation, is not as important as the big picture.

I try never to lecture people on YA, but I'm going to lecture you.

You are 17. Almost an adult. Start acting like one. Deal with stress. Learn how, or it will steal your life. Your parents getting divorced is in your face right now, and I feel great empathy for all the emotions you are feeling right now. Guilt. Betrayal. Loss. Fear. Sorrow. All of these, and more.

I hope not, but things a lot worse than divorcing parents could happen in your life.

1. If you got married and had kids and found out that your husband or wife had a girlfriend or boyfriend, would you just run because you can't stand the stress?

2. If you were the parent of a disabled child, would you just run because you can't stand the stress?

3. If you had a death in the family, or a catastrophic health or financial event, would you just run because you can't stand the stress?

I could go on, but you get the picture.

Here are a few things I want you to think about.

1. Responsibility to your mother and father, who will still be your mother and father after the divorce.

2. You cannot solve any problems with a change of scenery. You take your problems with you.

3. I don't know if you really can't stand the stress, or if you simply do not want to deal with the issue.

4. You don't give your own or your friend's gender. but if you are female and he is male and he is actually your boyfriend, you have a severe credibility problem with me.

Enough lecturing. There is nothing more important than family. Warts and all.

Not for buying the ticket.
But for you to travel as a minor, yes.
Especially if you're thinking of flying abroad.

Just for buying you a plane ticket would not be kidnapping .. not even close.

He is not liable for what you do with a plane ticket. Unless you had tape recored conversations that you were running away.

By the way, everyone gets pissed off at your age. It will pass.. dont do anything to drastic.

go argue with your parents and tell them to be quiet because you can't take the stress. dont run away - especially on a plane.

Alley,

He can get in big-time legal trouble

Once you get to CA he can be busted for harboring a runaway. That is a felony.
