Miss Mayhem

I'm a large person and I am going on a plane. Will I fit?

I'm not sure what plane, but my son and I are going to be flying some time in April... I haven't been on a plane in yrs and I have heard terrible stories about people not fitting and this sort of thing. I weigh about 275.... will I fit, or should I plan just on not going?

And please don't be mean, I would like an honest answer. I have been losing weight, changed my diet radically and all that - and things are going well. I'm just still really anxious and sensitive about it.

I know people who are 275 lbs. and are fine in most economy-class seats, but it really depends where your weight is. If you are tall and generally proportional, then you won't have much problem. If you carry most of your weight in your hips, and aren't over 6', then it might be a squeeze. You can see seating dimensions for most airlines here: http://www.seatguru.com ... and can also request a seatbelt extender if you board and find out you can't buckle-up. If travelling with someone else, some armrests can go up between you, giving you a couple extra inches of space.

Don't cancel anything.
If you have the $ you can get three seats for the two of you and you'd be very comfy.

If you are like most of us and don't have extra $ take an aisle seat and have your son sit next to you.You can raise up the arm rests and you'll be fine. You can also share his tray table if you can't get yours down. It's a problem I have.My weight is in my tummy.

Wear comfy clothes and shoes.Do leg and feet exercises as often as you can.
Drink lots of water and stay away from alcohol. Bring snacks and books or magazines to read.

Have a great time !

you should be fine ... I think I weigh about the same as you and I manage

a lot depends on which airline you're travelling on as some airlines plan their seats wider than others ... you can always ask them how wide their seats are to get an idea of the space you need to fit into, either ask the airline directly or ask your travel agent to find out for you ... I traveled on an airline once that had very slim seats and I was pretty uncomfortable (and it didn't help that it was a long-haul flight too!!) but that was only once out of a good number of flights

I often find that the seat belts don't fit over me and if that should happen to you, just ask the stewardess for an extension (they won't be embarrassed by this so there is no reason why you should be either)

you should fit just fine i have seen people that have weighed at least 400 lbs fit (not very comfortably) on a plane and you could comfortably fit in 2 seats if there is an open seat

each airline has their own policy about special circumstances; they probably have that info on their websites. and most flight attendants are very gracious and accommodating.

i definitely agree about doing the exercises if you're going to be in the air for any length of time. NWA.com has a list of exercises to keep the blood flowing in a small space.

Of course you'll be able to go... unfortunately the airline might ask you to buy two seats along with your son's. It depends on the airline. I hope you go! Don't let something like that stop you from having a good time!

Pretty Much Amazing
You will be fine if the flight isn't full. The arm rests come up. Just ask the attendant to be seated by an empty seat as not to impose on someone esle's space (make it sound like it's to be polite.) No worries. If it's that bad, they will put you in the first class wider seats I would think.
