I am going on a flight over Thanksgiving, too.I am really worried for no reason. I have flown alone before but this time I am not. I think the layover is what I am worried about. I think I can help you out though because I wasn't scared the last time but this time I have no clue why I am freaking out.
Here are some tips...
People are telling you to drink right? Or take a prescription.
It isn't going to solve anything, It will make you forget about what is going on and what good will that do? If you want to CONQUER your fear you don't need those things. When you come back the fear will be back if you use those solutions.
Gum is the thing I suggest you bring and chew it during take-off and landing. If you don't it could take days to get the air pressure out of your ear.
When you do take off, since you have the gum in your mouth, breath through your nose. Then close your eyes. You should bring a blanket or a stuffed animal so you can hold onto it and squeeze it if you get scared.
Take BIG breaths and don't stagger your breathing. Also don't start do breath through your mouth because if you do you can't chew the gum and your ears will pop!
Sit back and relax. Chances are you not going alone and the person with you will make sure your ok.
Bring a snack you like but no liquids over 3 ounces, it is a rule. You probably won't like the food unless you like peanuts and plain crackers.
You should try to sleep because there will be turbulence. And if your awake you might feel like the plane is going to fall but it won't. I know because the last time I went on a plane I was alone and I could not sleep because there was no one I knew to wake me up if it landed. It felt like the plane was just going to drop but it doesn't! Trust me!
The pilots have trained for all sorts of situations. So there is no reason you need to worry.
Bring a jacket because people might turn on their AC and you might already be cold.
That is all I can think of but I hope you are not afraid any more.
Have a wonderful trip and remember to relax, it will keep you from worrying. |

You are safer on a plane than in a car
The pilots train for YEARS, bus drivers train for a week
Turbulence is only air - it won't break or punch holes in the plane
Get an aisle seat - you won't have to look outside or climb over people to go to the toilet. |

I was on my first plane ride 2 years ago. I was really nervous too, but it turned out alright and I have no problem flying. Badically you go through the airport, have everything checked, weigh your luggage, check in your luggage, walk through a metal detector, and all that. Then finally you get to the termina and you wait for them to let you board the plane. You walk though this half-inside half-outside tunnel thing which takes you to the plane. Then you put your carry-on bags in the compartment and sit down in your seat. The flight attendants will go over all the safetly procedures, or it will show it on the TV. Then yo need to buckle your seatbelt, and the plane drives over to the runway. Then they ait for the runway to be clear, and the plane can take off. Taking off is probably the weirdest part about flying. The plane drives really fast and then suddenly you're up in the air. It kind of makes your head feel weird.. I think that's because of the change in air pressure or something. Your ears also pop a whole bunch which is annoying, so people usually bring some gum to chew or a candy to suck on. Its kind of cool to watch out the window as you get higher and higher, but some people get sick from that, so I'm not sure if I'd reccomend that. Then the captain will announce when you reach the full height. Plane rides are actually pretty boring, but they usually show movies. You can either buy headphones, or bring a pair of your own so youcan watch the movie (regular headphones will plug in). So then when you start landing, the captain will usually announce it, but I've been on a few where they havent. You can't feel when you land. I was afraid that I'd get that roller coaster feeling in my stomach on my first plane ride, but you don't. My favourite part is during the last few minutes of landing, because if you look out the window you see things getting bigger and bigger, and the highways look pretty cool. When the plane lands theres a loud noise when it hits the ground. the lane kind of bounces one or two times (just so it doesnt shock you wehn it happens). But it's nothing scary. Then the plane slows down, stops, drives back to the airport, and everyone gets off the plane. Then you collect your luggage and you leave. So that's pretty much it. Good luck. |

for every 1 person that dies in a plane crash, more then 1000 die in car crashes, now, you probably ride cars, and your afraid of planes?
and anyway, the chance of a plane falling or crashing is 1/1000, nothing ot be afraid of |

I have a little piece of information I share with all my passengers that are afraid to fly. Most people think that turbulence is scary...however, a plane has NEVER gone down due to turbulence! Like a lot of people have said, flying is much safer than driving in a car. Bring things with you to keep you busy, or even strike up a conversation with the person next to you. That can also help pass the time by quickly. Good luck! Have fun and enjoy the ride....it really is a pretty view from that high up! |

Make sure you don't suffer from barotrauma (where your ears have trouble balancing the pressure when the plan lands causing PAIN)! So make sure you go well hydrated and use nasal spray to clear passageways if you have stuffiness. |

It's no big deal. My first plane ride was from Las Vegas to Belfast Ireland good thing I don't get motion sickness. Anyways make sure you take a Dramamine just in case that's the last thing you want to happen is for you to get sick on the plane. Next, take something that will keep you mind off the flight(Ipod, book, crossword puzzle, etc.). Honestly, unless you are afraid of heights I would sit by a window it will give you a chance to see whats going on with the plane and whats outside. I makes me feel a little less claustrophobic. As for your fear of something going wrong, just watch the flight attendants if they seem okay you will be okay. Also, if you get nervous just ask one of them whats on your mind, they flight all the time and are likely to put you at ease. Have a good holiday. |

If you are religious, a prayer always helps to calm you down
You can also take a good book to kill time in the air
if you are in to games, you can take a hand - held video game to keep your mind off of the flight.
As long as you occupy your self with something you should be OK.. I think..
Hope I helped a little |

take along earplugs. the higher the decibel (dB) rating, the greater noise attenuation. you'll have a much more comfortable flight.
get permission from the airline to do your stand-up routine in-flight. you can't charge the other passengers, but you can "pass the hat" for tips. nice way to make some spare cash for shopping at the airport to offset the high prices. |

Well, I myself hate flying. it scares me too. Tips for you, that work for me....the paper bag they give you in the seat in front of you,...breathe into it, with long deep breaths if you get scared. Take a cd player, or ipod, or something to keep you distracted! Good luck...and stay clalm! |

i first went on my airplane ride when i was 5 and i was going to london. i had no idea what a airplane was all iknew wasi was going someplace far. when we went on the air plane it was soooooo fun. we were second class and i think we went on british air ways. anyways, when we were going up my ears were feeling full of air so if this happens just open your mouth. when i was on the plane there were tvs on the back of each seat and headphones i watched a movie. the airplane food is not horrible! it is very yummy i remember i ate mac and cheese it was delicious. when it was time to go to sleep i wasnt tired but i sleept anyways, and guess what? the night was only about 2 minutes long! i was really confused then. when there is nothing to do, just look down. make sure to bring a laptop, radio, tv anything to keep you entertained. the scariest part of plane rides is lifting off and you can listen to LOUD music and close your eyes while this happens. you are sooooooo lucky i wish i could go on an air plane again! |

you will need lots of gum so your ears will not pop.
you might want to take a magazine and maybe an ipod or some type of music to get your mind off of being in the air. Just RELAX and you will be fine.Dont think about what could happen think about how much fun it will be when you get to your destination!!!! GOOD LUCK!!! hope you have fun..... |

Chew gum and swallow hard to help ease the pressure on your eardrums when you change altitudes. Don't look out the window and it's almost like riding a bus! |
