It's a "roll-up" site, meaning it searches multiple other pages for you, including the likes of Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz, etc.; as well as all of the airlines' own sites. In this way, it's a one-stop-shopping site, doing all the work for you and rank ordering flight according to price. You can even have it send you email alerts for fare changes on particular routes you choose.
I used to travel with a large group on a regular basis, and we always played a little "game:" The person who found the lowest fare 'won' and got a free dinner compliments of the other players. I ate many, many free meals because of Kayak.
